I really don't want to have to spend time installing this for a quick demo. Anybody have info? Thanks.

I think time is the issue for lots of us. ;)

Check out the template submissions - there are over 20 (30?, 40?) Joomla! v 1.5 demo websites available looking at the template contest entries.

Then, if it looks halfway interesting, throw it on a localhost. It probably won't take near as long as you, nor will it be very complicated. If you have questions about the installation, ask, we'll try to help you out!

Cheers,
Amy

My problem is that my current webhost (iPowerWeb) is transitioning everything and will charge me $75 an hour to install Joomla right now. Or they say I can wait a few weeks and do it myself with a tool they provide. Problem is I really need to take a look at it now. I'm not confident I can install Joomla manually and get it hooked up to a DB, etc.

I really don't want to pay for a whole other hosting account with another company to try Joomla. Maybe I'm missing some easier way to see if Joomla is the CMS solution for me. It really looks nice.

OK, hate to sound stupid, but I'm a designer. Not to swift on setting up a bunch of preferences to talk to a database. How would I do this on a local machine without some nifty installed like Fantastico?

The first link was instructions for installation - including how to install a localhost.

Send me an email at [email protected] and I'll hook you up for a couple of days review.

Thanks!

If someone can tell me how to set up a demo site that restores itself every few hours, I will be glad to lend some server space for a Demo for both 1.5 and 1.0 .
Just need to know how to make it automatically refresh itself first.

I have just added the first Joomla! 1.5 Demo for anyone to use. Here are the details:

http://www.therighteouspath.org/jdemo
username: demo
password: demo

http://www.therighteouspath.org/jdemo/administrator
username: demo
password: demo

The database is restored every day. And if too many people start playing with it, then it will be restored more often. Enjoy!

The Joomla! 1.0.13 Demo is now live for use:

http://www.therighteouspath.org/joomlademo
username: demo
password: demo

http://www.therighteouspath.org/joomlad ... inistrator
username: demo
password: demo
NOTE - If these don't work properly, check with Joomlaplace.org in the post directly below this one by AmyStephen.

So that all know, this is not an official Joomla! site. This is a memebr of the community just trying to give something back. Also, as soon as the Joomla! Site Team fixes the Demo site and brings it back to life, these sites will be taken offline. You are free to use them now, but when the links no longer work, it is because either Joomla! has rebuilt the oficial Demo site, or they have asked me to remove the demo...which I will gladly respect and comply!

Enjoy, guys! If you have any problems, feel free to send me e message on this site!

Here is another site containing five Joomla! v 1.5 Demos, each site is refreshed every 15 minutes. I'll try to process the SVN changes each day.

http://JoomlaPlace.org - Username and passwords: admin / admin or user / user.

Cheers Tim!
Amy :)

Edit: I moved it to the JoomlaPlace.org site - along with the sample existing websites. That way, demos of Joomla! v 1.5 and existing samples of Joomla! websites can be together. This is a community site - but not a J! org site. There are no names on this site and people can contribute to it, if desired.

Yes, thank you. I was able to login to Joomlaplace. Very helpful Thank you for your extra effort. Both of you. I'm coming from a Dot Net Nuke background and I like what I see. I know nothing about PHP though so modifying the template/skin will be a learning curve. Suppose I'll buy a book to help me. Thanks!

Hi Timothy

The administrator username & password don't work today. Have you changed them?

You're meaning for the 1.0.13 demo site? I'll try to change that for you. The 1.5 site works fine, as I just tried it.

It will have to wait until later though when I have a chance to re-install 1.0.x It's giving me some errors, possibly because of a previous user. Sorry for the wait, and thanks for the patience! :)

Would anyone be interested in a Joomla EC2 image?

I was thinking of taking the Drupal EC2 image and replacing it with Joomla 1.0.12 and 1.5

Any thoughts on some must have components to install on it?

(for those of you unaware, EC2 will let you run a complete virual host for 10 cents/hour plus std Amazon network bandwidth fees. For a start, I was thinking it would be great for someone who wants to play around on a site with full root authority. More longterm, I think it would be neat to also have a customized set of images, a load balancer, a mysql/file server and a web server, so you could launch 1 load balancer, 1 data server, and 2 or more web servers and play around with load balancing for 50 cents/hour)

Amy, why don't you put up a demo for 1.0.13? Cause it seems some people are still interested in that. My 1.5 is working fine. It's 1.0 that isn't.

Hi Timothy
Thanks for that. Yes I did mean the 1.0 site.
As a newbie I am just wondering why you have two versions 1.0 & 1.5. Is 1.5 stable enough yet to use for production web sites? Or is it solely here for improvement and testing by the development community? Which version would you use for a new web site being built today?
Is there anywhere on joomla.org that compares the features of 1.0 & 1.5?
Many thanks. Michael Jarosz.

1. There are many other forums out there where these questions are being discussed, but I'll answer them briefly here as well. Please try doing a search through the forums before asking again, though. Thanks!

Now that that's done. Let me answer. No, there are no pages that actually compare the two editions. Though, I will say that there really is nothing to compare. As soon as 1.5 is stable, it will be amazing. In fact, it's already my favorite over 1.0, for many reasons, and it isn't even Stable yet.

What would I recommend? Depends on the site you want. If you're planning on just doing something for yourself, family, or small group of people without having to install a whole lot of extensions to make it do exactly what you want, and you can work around bugs and glitches until they are fixed (like myself) go with 1.5. If you absolutely need to have all of the best extensions that Joomla! has available, go with 1.0 until 1.5 has more out.

I use 1.5 for everything I do. Put the site in legacy mode when I found an extension that works well with it, and will be upgraded to 1.5 Native as soon as 1.5 goes Stable. This way, I know that my site won't have to get a huge make-over one day if I switch from 1.0 to 1.5. Make-overs take time, and with the busness I'm in, time is not the best thing to waste. Especially as we're getting closer to 1.5 Stable release date.

I use 1.5 on my web-design websites It's not live yet, but it is there, and it's working great for me. I've found a few bugs, fixed a few and worked around others. I've had to deal with not having as many extensions, but the site is still ging to be great when it's finished. Also, as new extensions come out I will add them to the site. What does this mean? My visitors will want to return again later to see what else I have added! Keeping them coming back is a huge goal of mine.

But like I said, it depends on what you're looking for!

Thanks Timothy, that's really helpful.

I did try searching for "compare 1.0 and 1.5" but found nothing, so resorted to asking you.

Many thanks for your time in helping a newbie.
