Finally, now can I start coding ?

Post by Alfred » Sun Sep 09, 2007 6:37 pm

Well, thought I setup things over here as suggested in the documentation wiki....not the easiest way in my opinion.
Maybe it has to grow on you, but learning php, mysql and joomla is easier than getting to grips with eclips, xdebug and SVN, at least for now.

I thought I was doing just fine with dreamweaver and Programmer's Notepad but decided to give it a try..silly me ;-)

Anyway, after an afternoon of fiddling around I finally have my WAMP/Eclipse/Xdebug/Subclipse setup running and my first project uploaded to the JBeginners project group.

Maybe now I can even start working on it and start learning  :D

You're welcome to check the code, it is an absolute beginners project, a simple contact form, but I'm adding some more basic stuff so I can use it as a skeleton project for greater things to come.

Well, I guess if I can figure it out, anybody can.
Basically the instructions on document wiki are OK, but it assumes you've got PHP 5 installed while most hosts over here still use PHP4. So locally I'm also set up for PHP4 which had me struggled for a bit because I needed a different xdebug dll, also I prefer WAMP of XAMPP so that took some fiddling as well.

Now I need to invest some time in the IDE and debugging, I know it might slow me down at first but I'm sure it will pay off in the long run.

You know, I'm normally not this smart and sensible, but when you're getting our age sometimes it gets the better of me  ;)

You don't need SVN to download my example.
Just go to JoomlaCode and the jBeginners project, you'll find my component under the SVN tab.

Thanx Alfred. I have registered myself for the Jbeginners and hope to actively participate. Should I check out it with tortoise client so that i could understand the process of developing across boundaries with some concept of virtual teams. Believe me its thrilling me  8)
