Girl Scouts - Non Profit Websites for Service Units...

Post by weatherangel » Thu Jan 04, 2007 2:03 am

About 5 years ago I created a website for the Girl Scouts in the Seattle, WA area and used it to learn php.  The division that I created the site for was the Issaquah Service Unit and this site is being used to get information to parents and leaders about news and events in the area, as well as having a Cookie Management System and a Site Sale Management System which I wrote initially for phpNuke, and subsequently moved over to Joomla.  The site uses Community Builder to bring the troops together as well as ACL functions which are kind of hard coded in since the ACL in Joomla does not go deep enough.  I would use external ACL programs however it's a pain to keep it all up to date, and I receive no funding for the sites at present.  All of my time and code has been donated/volunteered to the Issaquah Service Unit and now the Running River Service Unit in Central Florida as well.  I would like to expand and allow others to use the cookie system, however it's not perfected yet, which probably won't happen until next cookie season (ours here starts tomorrow).

I can't share the actual domains for privacy reasons, however you can look here for a sample of what I'm offering the two service units which I work with:  http://www.myscouthost.com

On a side note, I've noticed how many options, and how professional the Boy Scout websites look.  One of my goals is to provide the same type of service for the Girl Scouts.  Since most women are not geeks like me, I kind of feel like it's my duty to do this for the girls... :)  Just one of the ways is by giving these two programs which REALLY help the two service units that I handle.

So in a nutshell, that's what I'm using Joomla for.

Hey, very cool to hear of another GS Geek!  I never thought I was alone, just in very select company -- and trying to gain more company while I'm at it! :)

What council are you with, if you don't mind my asking?

YIGS,

Ilene
Citrus Council

Girl Scouts of Tanasi Council, Inc. I'm not actively volunteering anymore (I led for 10 years or so), but still a GS for life.

Girl Scouts... Boy Scouts... we're all scouts so you'll always be in good company and someone will be there to help... just ask.
