this is a really nifty forum setup they have going on in this site. This site looks like its joomla. I'm wondering what extension are they using in this instance?

I think this forum method is Proprietary for joomla.org. if you need a forum component like this use "fireboard" component.

It's not proprietary (although the bridge may be) ... the forum software and version can be found by scrolling down and reading the footer.
