I'm trying to understand if a CMS system can work for me, not being a backend developer in php makes my questions a little tricky, I hope someone can make sense of it.
So I'm considering Joomla because I have a problem with integration of the IPB forum with the custom database used for login, an alternative route away from SDK.
The custom database in php and perl and admin custom pages works great, I work on the front end of design and style sheets.
From the user point of view, they get confused by the size of it, although there are simple forms to submit to each section, this is the part where they have to be logged in to submit a form adding to the database but there is no edit feature, not normally required except by the resource section. The whole site is public read without registering. Included are ratings and comments on every page.
I'm sure from my developers point of view, why would we want to envolope something that works efficiently. Is there a way of connecting the login side without effecting the main database? To make the user experience logged in (through IPB, site login & protect pages mod) better but leave the database results the same. Admin custom pages could be either/or.
To make the integration with Joomla, I'm looking for ease of use for the logged in user to submit information, to copy and paste, upload information, images, pdf perhaps, whatever format they want to submit to the database with the option to convert a formatted page in html. But the form fields may not allow such broad scope.
For example articles are listed under categories, publications and topics, then split into a dozen topics and these can be changed in php.
There are about half a dozen with different set ups in a growing knowledgebase.
A new cross section of unrelated material may have to be added soon as the knowledgebase dictates the direction it takes, growth is always unpredictable and expanding.
Ask me if you need further explanations.

2. I have another site I'm helping set up for one of my volunteers who will be starting his own non-profit.
He needs media, online radio, shop and general site, Joomla might be a good start, then I saw mosmedia or mosmedia lite, I was setting up oscommerce then I saw moscommerce. Which do you recommend and in which order should they be installed?
