Regarding mod_rewrite, broken old links, the CSS-less links, etc:

In testing, it worked. In practice, not so much. These are being addressed as soon as possible, we definitely made allowances for the old URLs... but in the end they did not work as anticipated.

We are working to fix.

I'll vote against the change due to the security problems phpBB has always had (just make sure you religiously keep the updates current, and prepare to spend hours with each update if you've done any mods). And the forums are much, much slower, so you may have some issue (or phpBB3 does).

But my personal preferences aside, I know a forum update is a massive undertaking, so all the work is appreciated.

When I converted my sites from phpBB2 to SMF, I used several re-direct files to send folks to the new forum (in a new directory), courtesy of a person who is on the same shared server. The format would have to change to go the other way, but here's my "redirect viewtopic.php" that sends links from the old forum to the new:

It may just be getting used to it, but there definetly seems to be missing function. Can't find 'New replies to your posts' option, and also posts that you havent read are not automatically set to display as bold and no icon

From the forum main page, just under the header, you'll find:

View your posts •View unanswered posts • View new posts • View active topics • Mark forums read
Within a post or in a specific forum, you'll have some, but not all of the above.

Aha thankyou Quads, if the function is still there, at least only at the start, then it will be as used as it ever was on my part
I haven't really looked into this much, even though I should be moderating a phpbb3 forum currently, but is there an easy way to enable a solved feature again? Perhaps an easier way? If there is, I'd love to hear about it.

I don't think this is a "let's vote on which forum software we'll use" kind of situation, phpBB is here.

Anyway, if you Joomla guys are working on the rewrite rules for old URL's, I'd love to see the solution because I'll be in the same kind of situation soon (migrating to J1.5 / phpBB3 from J1.0 / SMF).

This is just spreading of bad rumours to phpBB. And not true.

But of course its also a problem with thousands of bad modifications, bad server settings etc etc to phpBB by novise people during the years that have caused this problem and bad rumour.

I don't believe there will not be any problem for Joomla after this initial period and if they don't make a lot of insecure modifications not tested properly. One concern is how to improve the speed optimization Joomla-phpBB though...

At this point at least it seems that new forum is faster.

For those who would like to migrate existing forums to phpBB there is a place all about 3.0 converters on phpbb site. Lot of stuff to read.

Congrats on the huge undertaking, nice to see a new design, and it does seem a bit faster, but I think you should have waited a few months or at least thought it through a bit better.

The best thing about the old forum was the usability, especially in terms of searching - when I was having problems, I nearly always quickly found a solution and could get back to work. Now you've completely killed the usability/searchability, at least until google catches up, and this forum is huge. How in the world should we find anything in the meantime? Do we really need to go to each forum and sub forum?

I don't know phpbb very well, but there must be an advanced search that will allow searching across selected forums. If there is one, can you please turn it on?

This forum is first and foremost a resource, at least for me as the "end user", and up till now it was a very valuable one, but now it is useless as far as that goes (at least for the time)... and that at a "critical" period with the learning curve and implementation of 1.5.

Sorry, but the first phrase that came to my mind, especially when I see topics I need in the google search results but can't get to, is a rather sarcastic "oh, thanks."

Use the link/url search.php I'm guessing the theme is the cause that advanced search is not showing on each page yet.

Yes search is quiet stable now but still having problems with friends/foes lists and bookmarks or subscribed topics are all empty. May be needed to convert or add database in phpbb3 for that... May be work is still going on.

Old forum is now available in google and yahoo cache only, and it will be gone from there soon. Use internet wayback machine if you are in love sincerely.

how are you syncing users? so Joomla phpBB is not using the Rokbridge authentication at all? how have you done this?

The users are not synced to Joomla!. When you registered, you registered in phpbb3 (or SMF if you did on the old forum). The Joomla! code is not attached to this site in any way. The reason it looks like the other Joomla.org websites is because of theming and coding the phpbb3 site.

All other sites on Joomla.org sites do use Joomla 1.0.14, however, and do have registration within those sites separate from forum.joomla.org

When I reindex the db, search will work again. I have no ETA though.. still busy on others things right now.

Your experience might be different, but its impolite to say I'm lying. I'm speaking from experience with phpBB since 2001, with one moderately busy forum that has over 200 regular users and 50,000 messages in the database. In that time, they have had 22 security releases averaging one every four months. Each one required hours of my time to update the software. Search for "phpBB" and then "SMF" at http://search.securityfocus.com/ and you'll see SMF with 5 pages of results, while phpBB has 34 pages. phpBB3 may be better, if they have adopted the "one click upgrade" process used by other systems. But the number of hackers targeting the ubiquitous phpBB means you have to stay ever vigilant.

But, that's just my opinion on the software. The change came at a bad time for me, because I was struggling to find a way to reinstall J! without losing all my content and settings, and I couldn't find the answer. Timing aside, we have to remember the people doing this are volunteers, and they do a great job. Its a massive undertaking on a forum this size, and they are working very hard to restore functionality. So, I appreciate it even though it sounds like I'm complaining!

But I didnt say that you are lying just that its so much bad unfair rumours to phpBB. And in my opinion its not true compared to other apps of this type.

A also believe that a lot of things have happened for the good about security, standards and how we build apps today compared to the situation of year 2000 when phpBB started. It would also mean that we have better skills, procedures today to make things of better quality also for security reasons. So it would be easier today to create a secure app then it was at that time bcs today we think security from the beginning of our dev process.

I checked quickly and I also think If you go through these 34 pages of phpBB (http://search.securityfocus.com/) in detailj with significance to security of core phpBB you will also find a lot of these security holes for phpBB coming from tweaked phpBBs and also modifications(mods) for phpBB. Thats what I mean.

Maybe this forum couldn't the best one in the world but I think to wipe SMF out was a good idea. We are open source and it is better to use real open source forums...

about PHPBB I know it is widely used, but just for talking about, what to choose (or what's in your opinion the best choice) after SMF experience? Obviously with our open source philosophy
