Joomla.org sites very slow at times
The last couple of days I've noticed that the Joomla.org sites respond very slow at times. A couple of minutes ago I couldn't reach it at all. Is this a heavy traffic problem or am I the only one experiencing this?

The server is under very heavy load. Rochen is informing is that it appears to be an attack but they are looking into it.

Let's hope it isn't an attack
Maybe they're trying to get Joomla.org too just like they did today with http://www.mamboserver.com, it was defaced.

Re: Joomla.org sites very slow at times
Compared to earlier this week, it was noticably better. I've been online most of today, and had to way for seconds a few times. During this week it was worse.

We are hoping that with the couple of tweaks that we have applied, this will be a non-issue.
There were some issues with Apache, but we think we have nailed them. It had to do with some bad Mod_Rewrite Rules.
We have upgraded the server's hardware from 1 GB of RAM to 2 GB of RAM. Because of this extra RAM, I have been able to make the MySQL Query Cache size much bigger than we were able to before. With this, hopefully the most common queries won't take so long since it would already be cached.
Please note that during the night, specifically at around 1 or 2 AM EST, the server does its backups and runs AWStats on the Apache DOMLOGs. So naturally, the server will respond slower than if it wasn't doing those tasks, hopefully it isn't too slow.
Please report any issues you do have, we will be monitoring this server extra closely over the next couple of days. Rochen wants to make sure that this server is stable and remains so and I am sure that you want a nice and smooth running Joomla!TM web site.

Re: Joomla.org sites very slow at times
The forum still loads very slow at times... I had to wait more then 6 seconds for the page with new reactions to load. After that I got a message of Firefox that it timed out because of the slow response. But now it loads normal again... I don't mind waiting 1, 2 seconds or less.
Overall it loads fast, less then a second, but sometimes it's just too busy I guess.
Thanks for all the good effort Tom and Brad for keeping this site up and running!

Re: Joomla.org sites very slow at times
I have an idea about a possible fix for that, but I will have to do some more research into it.
Re: Joomla.org sites very slow at times
I will be doing some database maintenance later on this evening, but I will put the forum into offline mode while I do the work.

Re: Joomla.org sites very slow at times
Some of the tweaks to the databases have already been applied, you should be seeing a dramatic improvement.
Re: Joomla.org sites very slow at times
The tweaks have been applied to MySQL as per some suggestions at the SMF site. Already I have seen a dramatic improvement in performance.

I thought I was the only one experiencing this. I'm here most of the day during the week, and I noticed SQL errors stating something like could not connect (when trying to get to the forums). I'm glad you guys are trackin the problem down.

What were the recommendations and the tweaks applied?
“How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice.
“You must be,” said the Cat, “or you wouldn’t have come here.”
Re: Joomla.org sites very slow at times
A couple of suggestions stated that converting certain key tables to InnoDB would speed a few things up.

Things are running smooth now... no more timeouts and faster response times! Thanks for your effort Tom and Brad (Rochen)!

Seems that the ugly

Re: Joomla.org sites very slow at times

This thread is over 12 months old We now host the Joomla sites across 4 servers, and are not seeing any more_rewrite errors..
Perhaps try posting your question in one of the General Joomla sections of this forum. All the best.
