Placing a static image in a module? - Guilliam's Little Walkthru(in the park) -

Post by guilliam » Tue Aug 23, 2005 12:42 am

.

"HOW to insert static images inside a module"
This walkthru is ~almost~ same with inserting ".swf" or flash animations.

Versions, tools, etc. needed:

1. Mambo 4.5.2 Stable [ Titan ]

2.  rhuk_solarflare II (used this template for this walthru since its the common or the default template used)

3. "com_TinyMCE-EXPAdmin1beta4.zip" AND "bot_TinyMCE-EXP125beta4.zip" both can be downloaded from: http://mamboforge.net/frs/?group_id=974 (mambo wyswyg editor, BUT you can use almost any wyswyg editor depending on your preference, while for the purpose of this walkthru, this is the wyswyg editor that we will be using.) IF you get "Permission ERRORS" in installing the said "bot_TinyMCE-EXP" please go to "site_root/mambots/" and change the folder PERMISSION of the folder "/editors" to 777. make sure to chmod the folder BACK again to "755" after the installation. then in your " Global Configuration" (admin/backend) on the "WYSIWYG Editor:" select "TinyMCE-EXP" as your default wyswyg editor.. check image below for reference:

Image

4. A little knowledge in administering Mambo  :D

The Procedure: (assuming the installation of the wyswyg editor went fine)

1. login to your mambo backend(administrator)

2. click on the "Modules" tab (upper menu), then "Site Modules", it will bring you to the "Site Module Manager" page.

3. Fill in the FIELDS with:

3.a.)  Title: static test

3.b.)  Show title: yes (check screenshot below for reference)
Image

4.
on the "content:"
4.a.) write a text something like "this is a test"

4.b.) highlight the text "this is a test" and click on "center", in doing so you should see your sample text aligned in the center by now. (check screenshot below)
Image

4.c.) press ENTER once(so the active cursor will be down below your sample text), then click on "insert/edit image".

4.d.) you will see a pop up window like this:
Image

4.e.) click on "browse" on that pop window, and select the image that you wish to upload(the width should NOT be more than the width of the module box, i.e. not more than 150px, for the SFII template)

4.f.) once the image is uploaded successfully.. you should see a thumbnail image of it in the upper box(where the thumbnails are presented) click on it once and let the image manager fill in the other fields with default values(you can actually do furnishings on the values, BUT for the purpose of this walk thru, the default values filled in will be fine.) click the "ok" button in the bottom right  of the image manager's pop up window. in doing so, your screen will look similar to this(the image depends on what image you uploaded):
Image

4.g.) IF you want the image to be a link(clickable to proceed to another page, pls follow the following steps, IF NOT, proceed to walkthru #5).

4.g.1.)click on the image again, when clicked and active, click on the icon "insert/edit link"(its the icon which looks like a chain). clicking on that button will lead you to a pop-up window of: "Link to Published Content/Enter Link Information". disregard the fields in the "Link to Published Content", we will link the image with an exiting page/url for this session.

4.g.2.) fill in the fields:
"URL:" - the url where you want the page to be pointed when clicked.
"Title:" - shows when mouse over
"Protocol:" - what protocol to be used(just leave this as the default value of "Other"
"Target" - options what you wish the browser will behave when clicked(for this walk thru, choose "_blank"
(please see screenshot below for reference):
Image

4.g.3.) click on the button "insert"

5.)
in the main window of: "Site Module:  New" the window were currently configuring. click the icon located on the upper right labeled "Save". once saved you will be lead to the page: "Module Manager [ Site ]" and would see the module we just made named "static test". make sure it is PUBLISHED. (see screenshot below for reference)
Image

6.) go to your front end(the site).. you should see NOW the module you made. on my example, it looks something like the screenshot below:
Image

DONE!!!  :D

NOW i leave the tinkering to you on configuring the image manager like, swap image, links, target properties of the links, etc.  :p

hope that helps!

btw.. excuse my errors in typo's and spelling.. dont have time anymore to check and edit those errors.

lemme hear your outcome and feedback to this walkthru.

@manuman,

hello sir shayne! yes very much interested, already have a close ties with @kenmcd though.. in which all walkthrus that i have done will have him notified so that it will be added to his tips and tricks(or its the relationship that we had back in the ~old~ forums).

in regards with madam michelle and the entire *ambo or the CMS manual, i believe i may not be able to do as much help or aid in that area since i've seen there are already a lot of community volunteers checking and aiding on the user manual.

my suggestion though(if it is possible), that i may have an access(mod access) with the tips and tricks sub forums and add a subforum titled:

WALKTHROUGH'S

in which i can post threads and lock it specifically for WALK THROUGH's(in which this is what i believe i best can help the documentation team and not in the user manual). if this idea would be implemented, i'll then ask or form my own little team of WAlK THROUGH documentators and would work in close relationship or "under" the main documentation team. thus(but not limited to the doc team leader but also from the community), a WISHLIST's for walk thru documentation will be asked from the doc team leader.

lemme hear your thoughts or feasibility of this idea and/or suggestion.

Sounds short & sweet.

@manuman

The idea is sound. Walkthroughs and/or tips and tricks is a shorter doc which would be highly read and needed by newbies and veterans alike. A rather specific approach to using the CMS and its functions and how to extend it. Rather than have a loose tips & tricks paper out on the web, let's have volunteers from the community release an official tips and tricks right out of the stock codes and official component releases.

Manuman, should the idea be approved, I'd be glad to volunteer under Guilliam here. I know I can trust the guy's leadership.

Very nice guilliam,
Thank you for that...it was very helpful

I have a question thought, When you insert an image, I have a different screen, I do not have the options you have on top, as far for the config options, i have them on advanced and the popup is checked..I'm using com_mosCE1RC2.zip and bot_mosce1RC1.zip

I love it, much better than the standard on

nice work guilliam. One I'll have to try.

One error that jumped out at me.

4.g.) IF you want the image to be a link(clickable to proceed to another page, pls follow the preceding steps, IF NOT, proceed to walkthru #5).

This should actually be following steps.

Sorry to be critical :-[

@sam, i didnt actually understood your question.. the walkthru was written before the release of mosce(stable), i'll amend the walkthru if ever i have time OR a co team member OR anyone may volunteer to add that part of the walkthru specifically for the mosce. btw,.. if you have time and may want to volunteer, please pm ms michelle bisson and state your interest regarding to join the proposed doc team specifically for walkthru's, tips & tricks.

what Janna!?? woooow! what a very lovely toddler you have sam! nice blue eyes. (",)

@Woof, already took note and edited the first post. thank you for taking notice, it was the direct opposite, was indeed supposed to read as "following" or "subsequent". it was actually lifted from my walkthru's in the the "other" forums and wasnt able to make a review in posting it here. again, thank you.

@all, still have some more walkthru's i made back in the "other" forums, i'll transfer them or cross reference the same walkthru's as soon as i have time.

I am new to Joomla and I am confused about how to setup the editor.

BUT you can use almost any wyswyg editor depending on your preference, while for the purpose of this walkthru, this is the wyswyg editor that we will be using.) BIG GAP IF you get "Permission ERRORS" in installing the said "bot_TinyMCE-EXP" please go to "site_root/mambots/"

At the BiG GAP. You upload not install and which folder to which web folder for permissions? And what is the Mombot file xxxxx.php do I place in the field?

I have version 1.0.4 and I can not get the flash object to give me the browse option. Using Firefox / Mozilla.

Regards,

Rick

You need to create a file called "files" under Joomla dir, and give it 777 permission for it to save the swf files, to edit the mosce configuration you need to give mosce.config.php 777 permission, once you are done then set it back to 644. A very nice tool is com_mamboxplorer 1.2.1. It's very handy to explore your root dir, delete, and change permission to files and folders instead of logging in to your Cpanel every time you need to change something. How secure it is, I do not know, but if you give your admin location an extra username and password via Cpanel, you should be fine.

One Thing I have noticed when inserting a flash using mosce, (I do not know if they did fix it) is giving empty tags output. Like valign"" and so forth which is not a valid xhtml tags

I have tried most and came to conclusion that not using any "wyswyg editor" is the best thing man ever made. If you know html somehow, you might be more comfortable without it.

I created a folder, "movie" from within the Media Manager and also did with FTP. I notice while even logged off the file permission is controlled by Joomla - I can not over-ride it with the FTP nor remove it. Does this mean that creating a folder from within the Media Manager you can not have permission set to 777?

to edit the mosce configuration you need to give mosce.config.php 777 permission,

Where is that file located? Please note that I am just a few hours into Joomla.

Rick

Only what was in the download of Joomla. If it is not included as one of the package file - then I do not have it. Where do I get it? Why is it isn't packaged with Joomla?

I understand what you are saying about text editiors, when you have editors who know nothing or do not want to learn tags, you are left with using a text editor.

I thank you for your persistance in assisting me,
