good to know. i edited all my .htaccess files in all my installations like the one i posted above.. so actually this is interesting.. if each installation is using inheritance then i could just use one htacess in the root install and not have to edit 20 different files, is that right?

We are moving towards 404 processing by the script itself. In the future there will be customizable 404 page and plugable SEF which require htaccess like this.

There is a situation where some loops could be created. That's if you have multiple installations of Joomla in subdirectories. Make sure every subdirectory has its own htaccess file, even to turn off mod_rewrite if you don't use SEF. Otherwise it will inherit htaccess from directory above and there can some problems arise.

Thanks for clarifying this Emir.  I was under the impression that the RewriteRule ^(.*) index.php was going to be changed with Joomla 1.1.
IMO, 404 processing is adequately handled by Apache without needing additional handling by the script (which could lead to interesting situations where Joomla is used for only part of the whole site) and I see no need to keep bad htaccess directives simply because some 3rd party components or plugins may require it.
Where would that leave those people who may not want to use the plugable sef? Just where we are now, with high server loads and looping?  Sorry if I sound annoyed, but its been a year since I first raised the htaccess issue, during which time I have had sites suspended and others in danger of suspension due to the basic sef.  I was happy when I was told this was going to be changed, but now it seems that its going to get worse, not better.  Disappointed is not a strong enough word for me right now.

Hello,

I have Duplicate content since I patch from 1.0.4 to 1.0.5

I don’t understand the problem because before I patch my joomla all was ok. The links to content were the same on the frontpage, in category and section.
But since I patch, links are differents and I have 3 differents links on frontpage, category or section.

I’m really surprised because I can read in the changelog :

24-Nov-2005 Emir Sakic
# Fixed artf1705 : Not same URL for same item : duplicate content

Is it an issue of the 1.0.5 version?

Thanks

David

I bought SEF Advance this afternoon (in france) to solve duplicate content... ;-)

I will try it later :-)

Thanks... Joomla is really fantastic

No, because if an installation in subdirectory /whatever/ inherits htaccess rules from the root then all not found pages will be redirected to root's index.php instead of /whatever/index.php
That's why you should have htaccess in all subdirectories, even in those that don't use SEF.

Sorry but I don't see why current htaccess is bad? It will NOT cause endless looping. If a file is not there it will get redirected to index.php, there is nothing endless here.

Please give me the exact example of endless loop and we will do our best to correct it.
In my expirience it's only if you have multiple Joomla installations in subdirectories which inherit htaccess rules from directory above that can cause the loop. But even old htaccess with only content and component can do the same. Solution is to have htaccess in each Joomla installation.

The fact is, the htaccess delivered with Joomla! pushes loads on servers like there's no tomorrow.  It was so bad, in fact, that even our own servers on joomla.org kept crashing (remember those intermittent outages?).  The .htaccess on our server was changed and there hasn't been a problem since.

Is the .htaccess being delivered with the Joomla! package the same as the one used on joomla.org?  If not, why not?

Thanks

Hey guys

With all these posts good and bad can someone please advise if the patch to 1.0.5 is safe or not?  I don't want to apply it if it is going ot have the 404 errors (SEF) and the server resource (htaccess) issues.

Why can't a fixed 1.0.5 patch be provided that contains all the so called fixes please.

Cheers

Greg

If you have any doubt, wait. It is not required to update to 1.0.5.

Do your homework. Check to see if any 3rd party components that you are depending on report any problems. An example is Community Builder.

From their site:
It appears that Joomla 1.0.5 and CB 1.0 RC2 have problems. The forums already address some of these issues. A Joomla forum post (made by one of the Joomla developers) suggests to revert back to a previous version of the database.php file. This is probably not the right thing to do. Beat, our lead developer, has contacted the Joomla team and at this point and until things can be resolved, the CB team suggests that all CB installations do not upgrade to Joomla 1.0.5. We are working on this problem and hopefully it will be resolved soon. Thank you for your patience.

Because it will be called 1.0.6. Patience. In the year I've worked with $ambo/Joomla sites, these dev's have worked their butts off for the community. They are human, but they also have a lot of well placed pride in their work.

Nic the issue on our servers was not htaccess fault! What you say is simply not true. Please get the facts straight first.
The issue with joomla.org was multiple Joomla installations in subdirectories which I just explained. Go read my previous posts in this thread. What they did is they put htaccess in every Joomla subdirectory so rules are not inherited.

Alright gentleman, let's keep it civil. :) Just kidding, I think the load has increased according to my testing. How much is not known to me at this point. It would be interesting to find out why joomla has started to pull on the resources. I've been pounding on 1.0.5 here lately and I've noticed the decrease in response with page load times.

Added: Why would htaccess have anything to do with this? I write the htaccess into the conf configurations for each site. Removing the htaccess doesn't show a whopping improvement in my opinion.

Is this related to the new sef bug? I patched it already using saka's sef.php... but my ItemID's are incorrectly outputted...

For example on my front page http://www.kaitech.hk, all the article items that are shown with their introl gets /1 appended, as in http://www.kaitech.hk/content/view/18/1/

This only happens to content items displayed using "# Intro"!

Would the htaccess contain the same syntax/content but just replicated to all the subdirectories?
