Forum search driving me nuts!

Post by nomi » Thu Jan 26, 2006 3:28 pm

I'm not sure if something got changed or what, but the search on here is really driving me nuts. Practically everything I search for comes up with this error:
Your query was not specific enough. Try using larger words, or less common phrases.

If I'm searching for a specific error that I get, it doesn't work and then I end up trying about 5 variations to try to find something and end up with unspecific results.

For example, this morning I was searching for the following:
"Please contact system administrator. 2" - error message
"system administrator" - error message
"error 2" - bunch of unrelated results
"site offline 2"- 1 result with no response
"database error 2" - finally something, but if I didn't know it was a database error, then what?

Is there any way to make it not so strict again?

Thanks!

Thanks kenmcd! I did eventually find what I wanted, but I've been having problems with the search for awhile now, so thought I would mention it and use that as an example since it was the latest. It's not a big issue to look in Google either, but I think that doesn't really solve the problem itself. Maybe I'm the only one with this particular problem though! Who knows...

I understand your pain - the SMF search can be very frustrating at times.
There are a number of terms excluded from the search even if you are searching for exact phrase.
Using Google can help.

(wait until you deal with the forge search  ;) )

Thanks Ken.

Due to the size of the forums, we have to limit the search to full words. I think this is the issue you may be confronted with.

Thanks for understanding.
