Long nicknames issue

Post by sc00zy » Fri Aug 26, 2005 11:10 am

I noticed long nicknames "slide" under the right column when in 1024x768px or lower resolution.
An example: http://forum.opensourcematters.org/inde ... l#msg15329

This has been confirmed as a feature that is NOT enabled in SMF.

So.. maybe something in the future..??

I think this would take care of it.

The right Number ?

You may also want GD the Avatars or html force the size.

On a Mac, long nicknames show differently depending upon which browser you use (don't we love 'em to be all different?  ??? ): Opera displays a truncated name, IE displays the whole name by nudging the message to the right (see it's not in line with the message above), and Safari display the whole name but underneath the icon.

// What I think is doing it.

//
//style="overflow: hidden;"//
and it's hardcoded in the template not style sheet.

//Could use this but if a user use a crazy long name then what  ?
// white-space: nowrap;

//Could Max lenght like ten charters

Code: Select all

//<?php substr($namevar, 0, 9);?>

For Leolam's issue, try this URL:

http://forum.opensourcematters.org/inde ... 1#msg17195

That will use the default theme (administrators only, on this forum) and you will see that it shows a scrollbar as expected.

For the issue of this topic, avatars and long names not showing, there are a few groups with a few different opinions:

1. If someone has a big avatar or a long name, the left side should grow for only that post (even if it means 50% of the width is just the user info.)
2. If someone has a big avatar or a long name, the left side of all posts should grow (even if it means 50/50.)
3. If someone has a big avatar or a long name, it should not be shown past a reasonable length - the profile still shows the entire name.

Different themes are known to follow different opinions.  Safari is also known to have rendering problems in this area.

Long term, if we can make our own theme perhaps we can eliminate some of these niggly little issues. :)
