Joomlaforge has been dreadfully slow since nearly day 1. Recently things have gotten so bad, that, not only is it painful to try and use, but I find that many times file releases are simply inaccessible. It's not much use to have a resource like this, when one of its primary missions is to provide these files to the community.
I think this is a serious issue that merits a tiger-team approach to both understand the problem and come up with a solution. If no solution is tenable, maybe it would be wise to simply suggest that people seek out alternatives?

Re: Joomlaforge needs some serious help
I've never seen the forge painfully, unacceptably slow, however it was originally intended as a developer resource. We are about to launch a software directory, but I don't want to steal that team's excitement so will only say "COMING SOON"
Stay tuned on the developer portal (dev.joomla.org)...
The forge was really intended for developers, and that typically means subversion and tracker usage. I think you might be also having a network latency issue, depending on where you are coming in from. The servers (dual Opterons, by the way, about 800% more output than the old mamboforge) are living in the same datacenter as Slashdot and SourceForge.net, so bandwidth shouldn't be a problem.
I'd like to know what aspects of using the forge are so slow to you, and with some more information I can try to diagnose the problem. Can you tell me what it is that you are doing, that is so slow?

I'd still maintain that is is slow, but on this partcular day, it was simply getting a particular released file, which kept timing out. I think this might ultimately be some strange bug with Joomlaforge.

A software directory will be a very welcome addition indeed! Great news! I was just about to go over here and whine about what the other kids have going on, because it looks good:
