LOL! You know - I think it's great for a student to "rebel" by creating a healthy place for students to hang out with each other and talk. You will learn and they will get to know one another. Sounds fantastic!

Maxilla - you have class. The Newbold College website is amongst the best, in my opinion. Elegant and Simple is always most beautiful. I don't know why that is -- maybe because the eye can absorb and understand it easier. You have excellent ideas and I hope you let us know how you are doing and if you have problems we might be able to help you with.

Good luck! Keep up the good "rebelling!"

Gee.. I dont know what to say.. :-[ heheh.. thanx.. that just gave me a boost in confidence (i've been working the website for 4 days strainght now.. good thing I'm having my hols now.. )

..maybe because the eye can absorb and understand it easier.

I want to do that.. but I have to think ahead.. too.. since there are two major (for now) module I want to use in the front page.. that are: Shoutbox and a calander/event module.. using that simple and nice theme in used in the Newbold College website.. is good enough.. but im not sure.. it will be in 'harmony' if I put those two module in it.. (or mayb there are more.. to put/implement) so right now.. I've download Lunar eclipse, a free template from http://www.joomlashack.com and try to 'customise' so that I can aim 'easy for the eyes' theme. Since the free template itself is dark (pitch black I might say.. kinda a no-no for community website) I want to lighten it and edit most of it visually.. but I'm using the template's skeleton to cater the stuff that I'll implement.. It's time for photoshop'in now.. heheh  8)

Yet.. still I'm just testing this out.. whether it would work or not.. meantime.. can anybody show me a free template thats look nearly like Newbold College's website template (optimized for 1024x768)? Still love the simplicity of it.. heheh  :)

Cheers!

Hmmm... or maybe I should make a main website page (index.html, got the info about the difference with main page of a website and the frontpage componet of Joomla [index.php] in one of the mini faq in the F.A.Q Topics) and put a third party shoutbox in it.. and overdose in customising index.html page.. then put a link somewhere.. to make a gateway to Joomla.. any ideas ppl? Since, me, myself.. cant think a better way.. of making a 'gateway' to Joomla.. since Joomla's frontpage is so damn good! heheh..

Btw.. is it possible to put a componet/module somewhere 'outside' joomla? like.. making a new php page.. with code externally taking from the Joomla's database. Eg. Taking events from the event componet/module.. and putting that data.. somewhere else.. in an external site/page?

anyway.. not too hard on this.. just a suggestion.. heheh.. a simple yes or no would do..

Cheers!

I am not certain if you are just thinking out loud, or asking a question in your first paragraph! lol! I do that, too, sort of design in my head -- and type at the same time.  I think (in general) it's a good idea to play around with Joomla, at first, and not get too tied into a certain look. Figure out how the tool works -- then figure out how to get the tool to work for you. Does that make sense?

Don't try paragraph #2 - again, try to do it "Joomla way" first, then branch out. So, for future questions on "How do I build a module, a component, a mambot, my own template, or hack the base code" - my answers to you are "no, no, no, no, and no!" lol - not yet!

Read this http://www.redevolution.com/component/o ... Itemid,41/

Before you go much further building your project, stop, back up and read this tutorial. Walk through it slowly and try to do the kinds of things you see in the book. If you do so, I promise you, Maxilla, it will PROPEL YOU FAST when you start building.

Keep us up-to-date. Maybe a thread in the Universities section called "Maxilla's Journey to Joomla!" - then blog it for us!

Later! Amy
