Well, no hand-made gfx here, but maybe some suggestions:

1. i'm not sure if it is a good idea to seperate logo and slogan - both should fit together in some way

2. i like the suggestions about clean shapes like well known brands - when seeing thoses shapes of puma, adidas and nike i thought about those bird-shapes preventing birds of crashing into windows. Then i thought a shape of a flying bird could be nice - birds... symbol for freedom, symbol for peace, symbol of elegance (see them flying), symbol of good navigation (coming back home), lightweight but full of power (light but powerfull cms), symbol for many dreams (flying men), intelligent animals... (stop thinking about those white/black dots at your car, i know some birds do make a lot of sh*t  ;D )

I found this picture - maybe some of you talented gfx-cracks can make it suitable for a logo?

Just my thoughts...

Whoah... this thread grows like lightning...

Here's my 0.02cents

The first is a blatant rip-off of one of Jick's (core-dev) logo's he has made for Simpleboard. So, all credits for it go to him, but I like the person-figures in it quite a lot. They'd make for good icons as well.
The second one is an impression of 'infinity' or 'unity' if you will. Could serve as an icon too, albeit rather wide for an icon I guess.

Here are some of my ideas.  I used blue mostly because it promotes stability.

The first one, hooked, just kinda happened while looking for a unique font and I though it was neat, however probably not, in all reality, feasable.

The second and third ones are just logos for the fourth one which is the name.

Hi folks!
My first post in here  :D

In my opinion a logo shoud be as simple as possible. But it also must have a very special style.

Here is my pic:

Image

in fact there are ony 3 forms to see. - its simple. Simple as joomla shoud be
but when you look closely, you can imagine the word "joomla!" in these 3 forms. - Check it out  ;)

roughly translated it goes:
"The bug is called Catita or Chinita in my country and is the only insect that gets rid of the plagues that affect the plants, without affecting the environment. I'm trying to represent the users of Joomla! who will get rid of all the problems (bugs) for  the plant (the system) to keep growing"

Nice and cool concept. I still see as a theme for a cool template than the logo for the Project.

My thinking is: If you have to explain what it means (any kind of logo) then a lot of people may loose the meaning by just looking at it. Think Apple, Puma again, one quick look and you know, heck even Window$ has a logo that as soon as you see it you "know".

This logo is inspired by a swahili drawing. It symbolizes a leaf or a tree.

Yes, no need to fear the color thing yet. It's not like back in '99-'00...remember when it seemed like every logo out there was blue & green with symbols of people leaping or a swirl/whirlpool. Compared to that the color thing is peanuts. As long as the logo is still recognizable when reduced to b&w or single color it should be fine.

Although you're right about the similarities, I also see quite distinct differences between the others and peek's proposed hand.
From another perspective: It does make a good logo, otherwise Google, Microsoft and MSNBC wouldn't have such logo's either... and they undoubtedly payed top bucks for having them created..
If the hand would resemble another logo, I'd say it resembles Google's Desktop logo more than any of the others shown here..
I like the hand; I'm trying to thing of something else, but the hand keeps coming back to me...

I agree... I think that there are enough similarities and differences to envoke a good feeling about it.  The hand logo is in the order of a rainbow (from thumb to finger) whereas the other are not.  The use of basic identifyable primary colors embraces the old "power in simplicity" that has made this CMS famous.  I think that the logo should envoke the same feelings.. power (by using the multicolored hand) and simplicity (using the basic, "boring" text for the Joomla name).  My $0.02 (or am I up to $0.06 now  ;))

I really like that, actually, although I liked the version that had the arrow coming over the globe better, and I think the "mla" portion needs a simplified version of that font.  When the font gets too complicated, it just doesn't work...

There was one earlier that looked like this, and I couldn't get back to work without adding the faces...

I must say that I like this on the best out of all of the amazing and talented submissions yet...

Image

I really liked the idea of the "J" being larger than the rest and putting a tagline under the "oomla!"

"All Together" was nice but I really liked "Set your sites on it" - both for the double meanings.

I also like "Set you sites on it" -- for me "All Together" seems redundant.

There are lots of other good tag lines being discussed here:
http://forum.opensourcematters.org/inde ... 090.0.html

It would be interesting to see some of these logo ideas incorporate a variety of the suggestions from that thread. Another I like is "Collective Intelligence".

A big thanks to chris_chile and eaxs for picking up my idea - and thanks for delivering good pictures (so that someone like me can show his idea!)

Nice to see what you have made out of it - i'd never seen a "J" in that bird  :o
my personal idea is a little bit less grafik, something like this:

Image
Image
Image

again i like that bird because it stands for:
moving forward, freedom, peace, intelligence, good navigation (roadmap), mankinds dream (flying), lightweight but powerfull... allthough a simple shape, easy to change in color to fit individual designs...

Thanks again to chris_chile and eaxs!
