I think the extensions area should inclde themes.
Looks are very important to the end user.
I first cut would be to put the menu item for themes in the extenstions area and point it to the off-site theme links.
One should be able to find themes via the menus.

This issue has been discussed before.
Here's some quote from a core member:
There are four main reasons why we don't allow templates on the extension site :
1. It would quickly turn the extension site into a template showcase.
2. The extension site doesn't really have the necessary features to showcase templates.
3. We have a limited amount of available resources (moderation hours and site maintanence)
4. In the future the extenstion site will be closely coupled with the developer forge, we also don't accept any template projects on the forge.
This doesn't mean we aren't looking for solutions. It will just not happen in the short term, priority lies on getting 1.1 towards beta at the moment.

Re: Theme area
eddy,
All valid reasons. Would you consider putting in a theme menu item in the extension left side menu that pulls a page saying the reasons and providing a page of links.
Having to find themes by going to the faq area and searching for themes to find an old post does not seem to be proper support.
It seems most strange that I could not find support for themes via the menus.
I also noted that there was no sitemap where I could find a theme area or page.
Thanks for your consideration. I hope you see this as a positive change. I think joomla looses to e107 big time when it comes to the promotion of themes and themes are what makes the coding "look" good.

Re: Theme area
All I am suggesting is a menu item on the left panel that points to the list guilliam provided at;

Re: Theme area
In a related discussion, we are working to add a Developer Tools category to the directory that will allow for the listing of software for Joomla that is not installable. Not a category for hacks hacks but rather a place to list tools that can help users create better Joomla sites. Specific examples of items to be included are JSAS, the Dreamweaver Template Extensions and others.
