social networking web tools
Hi fellow non-profit web people!
I am researching "social networking" software for my non-profit client with a couple hundred thousand members. It doesn't need to be designed around non-profits - it could be like myspace ... I am a Joomla developer and I love Joomla but am really open to anything. I also need to find working definitions of what social networking software is.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

Re: social networking web tools
i think community builder is the closest i've seen to allowing that, though i don't know how many users it can handle...you could try asking at http://www.joomlapolis.com. it's got plugin capabilities so you could extend it yourself if you know how.

Re: social networking web tools
Made i also add, integrate User HomePage (UHP) with community builder (CB) and you are close to having a community site. Speaking of which, UHP 2 is coming out soon which will allow users to have their own mini site on your site. It also allows uploading of audio files as well
Just check the features here: http://www.ravenswoodit.co.uk/content/view/38/2/
Looking forward to the release.
thanks,

I believe CB allows "connections" like a buddy system and you can install mamblog to give them their own blog area linked through their profile. I think there is a photo album with a CB plugin as well, so they can have their own photo gallery in their profile, too.

Re: social networking web tools
Can some one please verify if "connections" or degrees is in fact possible? By searching the Joomlapolis site, it doesn't appear that it is.

i use CBE (community builder enhanced) and I thought it seemed like myspace! It doesn't have degrees but it has buddies, testimonials, comments, and a blog (among other things). Register at mambome.com and view your profile. That will give you an idea of what its like.

yea, connections works fine.
Also, I think going with Community Builder is sort of like going with Joomla on a smaller scale.
People are making plugins there, and there is a lot of gravity there because so many of us need community sites that have a lot of activity revolve around users.
So there is incentive for people who develop newsletters, user status modules, galleries, blogs etc. to always plugin to community builder, so they can leverage the user settings, tab interfaces, etc.
If you build something custom, then you always have to update it yourself or get developer to help you, which is tougher in the long term.

Re: social networking web tools
Could Drupal at http://drupal.org be something for you? I have a lot of affection for and some experience with Joomla, but I will try to learn and use Drupal for my next project. It is about creating a network for teachers using storytelling, and Drupal has some interesting functionality I´d like to try, like the "Organic Groups" module. There is also the Civic Space distribution of Drupal/CivicCRM. I am not saying Drupal is better than Joomla but if your project is about social networking - and you have the time - you should check it out. There is a lot written about similarities and differences between Joomla/Mambo and Drupal and a rather common idea is that Drupal is more suited for networking. I can´t say that is true because I haven´t tried it - yet.
There is also a much simpler and not so mature system called Elgg at http://elgg.org It is called a "learning landscape" and built especially for educators, but it should be very useful for anyone wanting to create a space for social networking. It has podcasting features out-of-the-box too, which is interesting for storytellers. If you just need a simple system heavily focused on networking it could be worth checking out.
In my own search for social networking tools on the web, I came across an interesting idea. I have forgotten who wrote it, but it was someone with a lot of experience. The essence of it was: "There are only two indispensable tools for collaborating on the internet - a mailing-list and a wiki". The mailinglist I understand, but a wiki? The last time I tried it, it was too demanding for the average user. Anyone knows more about a user-friendly way of integrating a wiki in Joomla? [update] Just found out that there are tools for integrating both MediaWiki and DokuWiki. Much easier to use than I thought.
The User Homepage and Community Builder combination for Joomla sounds very interesting. I have also found the Community Builders forum very helpful. With some luck I might save myself the trouble of learning a new CMS ;-)
If someone has other ideas or more knowledge and practical experience than I have in this area, please tell us more! I think this is a really valuable subject.
