RSS feeds not working on joomla.org
I wanted to use the RSS links on Joomla.org, but got the message:

Error creating feed file, please check write permissions.
Can somebody fix this

There isnt one at the moment due to the restriction within Joomla! that means only the frontpage component is syndicated.
I am looking to see if I can create a custom component/solution to get aroudn the problem for now and then integrate this into Joomla! 1.1

Re: RSS feeds not working on joomla.org
They got it working over at Mamboserver news page
Couldnt you do the same thing and set up another Joomla?
How about including the latest 2 or 3 news items on the home page then, so it is picked up by the feed. As i said above, all the news is on the news page and the front page has very little updates.

Well to be honest they didnt, we did as this is how we designed the interlocking sites.
As you alluded to, this is because news.mamboserver.com is another site on a different domain.
We have adopted a different approach for Joomla.org in relation to News

We want to keep the distinction between the frontpage of joomla and the news section.
The frontpage will be only for official information and press releases about J!
The news section is the place for community news.

Re: RSS feeds not working on joomla.org
Ok as an update, completed a new extended syndicator functionality.
You can now syndicate from the 'News' section:
http://www.joomla.org/content/blogcategory/0/33/
Of the Joomla! site.

Re: RSS feeds not working on joomla.org
Cool thanks stinger
there are more things in the RSS 2 feed than are actually appearing in the site, im presumbing its news thats been submitted but not actually approved yet. When one of these items is viewed in my RSS reader (thunderbird), it gives me a 'you are not authorized message'
Top 3 storys on news now is
Google Site Search Module released
Joomla! links directory @ JoomlaHut.com
First commercial joomplates.com template
on the rss2 feed its
Joomla Links Directory Opens <- this gives me the you are not authorized message in TB
Google Site Search Module released
Joomla! links directory @ JoomlaHut.com
Probably just a small bug Thought you would like to know.

Thanks for the quick pickup.
Forgot to add a check for published state ::)
Anyway corrected now
And before anyone asks, if it doesnt make it into J! 1.0 (which is likely) than I will release to community as I created it as an installable component, module and mambot.

Re: RSS feeds not working on joomla.org
Great job Rey. Thanks.
It's syndicating nicely on my side.
I'm not sure what is different on the Frontpage vs. the News section is but the html seems to be smoother. I'm assuming because it was submitted as plain text rather than backend posted on the WYSIWYG?
I guess it does'nt matter but I'm working on a syndication com/mod set for a Flash scroller and it just renders nicer in your News section for some reason. It has a problem stripping out html tags and line breaks with some editors.

ccondrup wrote:Now, if only we can get the feeds from Gallery2 and SMF integrated with this as well
This will easily be possible.
The functionality is built with extensibility in mind.
All someone would need to do is create a Gallery2 and SMF RSSBot.
It works in the same way as the Search component of the core, so that you simply need to install a new bot for your component for it to syndicate links for that component - for example you could even syndicate your information from the contacts component.
A basic summary of how it works is like this:
How it works is that the module needs to be published on the page(s) you want syndicated.
- 1. The module sends the url being syndicated to the component.
This is why the syndicated link looks life this:
index.php?option=com_rss_xtd&feed=RSS1.0&type=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=0&Itemid=33
or
index.php?option=com_rss_xtd&feed=RSS1.0&type=com_weblinks&catid=26&Itemid=45- 2. The component loads the proper rss mambot (a new mambot group) for the component (determined by the type attribute in url).
I.E. Content, loads the Content RSSBot and weblinks loads the Weblinks RSS Bot.- 3. The bot pulls the required data from database and sends this back to the component.
- 4. Component than formats the data as a syndicatable feed.
Basically it works similar to how search bots work for extending the search component.
In other words you can syndicate the data of any component, so long as you create the necessary RSSBot for the component.
the module which directs to the syndicated links is a 'smart module'.
What ever page it is one it determines whether it can create syndicated links for that page.
Publish it on the Weblinks page, it syndicates weblinks.
Publish on a section page, syndicates content for only that section
Publish on a category page, synidcates content for only that category.
etc

Sorry not yet.
I have been extremely busy trying to get the 1.0.1, 1.0.2 and now 1.0.3 Joomla! releases out, so I havent had time yet to make some minor fixes that re needed before it can be released to the community

Hi Stingrey, in another thread a few weeks ago you mentioned that you were currently working on a solution for the above. Can I ask if you've made any progress yet and, if so, where I can find more information??
Many thanks,

Re: RSS feeds not working on joomla.org
The functionality I have discussed is now built into 1.1 and can be seen in the soon to be released 1.1.0 Alpha2.
Right now my priority is 1.1.0 Alpha2 and 1.0.8
So until then releasing this as a downloadable component/module/mambot is out of the question - sorry.

Re: RSS feeds not working on joomla.org
Hi there...just took a look at 1.1 alpha (and appreciate it is an alpha)...and it's looking great. The syndication confused me. Obviously people have indicated that they would like to be able to syndicate more than just the stories on the main page. I'm using com_rssxt at the moment and can set how many stories I want syndicated and from which sections (and even categories) that those 10 items are to be pulled from.
I wonder if it will be that specific in 1.1? Just having a bit of a play with it I get the impression you just say whether you want frontpage and/or content syndicated? There are some sections of content I don't want appearing in my rss feed but not sure if it will allow this.
Sorry to ask now, but if it's not going to be like that in 1.1 I might start looking at some of the other options.
Can't wait for 1.1 though...it's looking great.
Phil

Re: RSS feeds not working on joomla.org
I have just bought a Mambo site and it is still on Mambo. Has not been upgraded yet. Will DS-syndicate work on this Mambo version?
