Considering the discusson concerning a Slogan or the lack of need for one, I like this one (or some variation on it) as the logo visually demonstrates "community".

Same problem as with Joomla!
Who is owner of the word "Jumla" ?  ;D

This kind of sculpture is traditional, made by a lot of sculptors in Ghana.
Shows community - "All togheter" - as a one unit.

Nickdesigner wrote:A logo is not really to advertise a brand, it is to re-enforce it.  ...

I agree with you at all.
Logo is nothing more than a way of visual identification. Visual id of company, company's product, community ...
But a great way to find out the proper logo design is to look first at the roots ...
Who we are?, What product is?, Who is made for? ... etc.
Sometimes (like in case of Joomla! I think) a good idea also is pay attention on source of name, it's meaning and why we choosed THIS name - what it means for us, what it should to mean for others.

So, that's the reason I suggest a motif like on picture above ...

This logo look rather interesting and unique.  Can a globe or something be added on top?  It seems to be empty wihtout it!

So for avoiding any misunderstandings or lost possibilities, or... for being more community, ok?

i agree with you ;) if there is no gallery for those logos i can create one on my website ?

It does have some of the infinity in the people/flower logo and in my celtic knot logo.
I wonder if you can keep some of that feeling and still simlplify it to a brand logo?
I may have a go at it, if I have the time...

Great idea by the way

The little man is a kokopelli (google it) that is a demigod figure in first millenium american ethnic art. In the beginning it was a motive in stone carving. It's a humpbacked fluteplayer that is a symbol for fertility and new life, the myth tells he's carrying babies, new seeds etc in his hump.

Yes, while I still favor the logo in my signature.  There are many I think would be great, and even those I don't favor have really amazing creativity.  I do think it is time to try to narrow it down and shut down submissions.

Amazing good work!

[It was in my signature.. then RobInk replaced it with a terse note rather an a polite message to follow a rule I had missed!!! How Miro lilke to just delete selective signatures rather than making polite requests!!! Sigh  Ok I'm better now]

Well, a lot of good proposals here.

In fact, when the name was chosen, the idea of the hand as a graphic came to my mind immediately.

The hand adds a nice story to the jumla meaning (all together).
A bare hand is a sign of transparency and honesty.
It is also a waving signal to other humans.
And a sign of common humanity.

But it had also to be a special hand, not any one, one with a meaning by itself.

Years ago, I did a research work in Southern Africa and took pictures at a hundred "Bushman Paintings" sites all over the place.

This hand was printed on the walls of a shelter, among many others. Its color comes from the iron oxyde used by the group of people who expressed themselves there. Most certainly a shamanic rite, similar to the ones found in European caves and tens of thousands year-old.

These hand prints are among the first attempt of Sapiens Sapiens to communicate.
They are more recent, but were not dated.
Image

And is not Joomla! about communicating?
The absence of paint in the palm is the way they are till today on the walls of the shelter, somewhere in the Cape Province.

Therefore we have the hand "the most ancient human signal to communicate", joomla! which means "all together" our Community, and this simple line to say that we communicate all together to the world.

The hand may be used as is for graphic only (one color for the purist), simple lines, available in eps. In this case I see it keeping the absence of paint in the palm.
Or integrated with the text and line.

And if someone tells you it looks like a kid painting, tell this person it verywell could be, a few thousands years ago, much before Internet. As a game or a rite. As a sign of what we are: human beings.

Thanks to Andy & Arno, for the font and the placement of the hand relative to the text.

Here is my new idea:

A logo, ok

an under slogan, NO

A simple question:

Why a slogan in english? the future of a cms has to be multi-language and why we do choose a good slogan in english that translated it can be a bad one ?!

Well instead of a slogan, describe what the cms is: simple fast and powerful and STOP. If you see Joomla everybody knows is a cms and not a windows application...

Joomla! simple fast & powerful

AND ALL can be easily translated in any language!!!

Do you agree, joomlers? ;)

I like the idea of making sure it translates.  Good point

BTW  Joomla! runs quite well on Windows based servers..  There are also GPL and Open Source Windows apps. :)

I think this is a great hand. But i try to keep the hole in the middle, from my point of view is an integral part of the hand itself.

Good concept!

The only problem with the hole in the middle is that some people might see that and think we're a religious group.

In relation with my theory about a multi-language translatable slogan (fast & simple) I like very much. You do not use too many colours like windows or google stuff but... where is the logo? An image, a little image is necessary.

A common question:
How about the colors?
Shall there be only one color ,which could stand for unity.
Or shall there be more colors, which stands for creativity, and so on.
Which of these is the mainatribute? - There can be only one. The logo should contain the/these color/s.
And the logo/symbol, should stand for "joomla" itself. not for the possibilitys of the program.

But thats just my thinking...maybe it helps to get a clear line here  ;)

My big problem with a hand is it has many different meaningss.  Power is one of the meanings, others can see it as the hand of god.  When I see an open hand I think of someone getting slapped.  Some people may see it as a high five.  Others can see it as someone looking for a hand out (begging).  Or  a cool analogy think of sign language (why no logos with joomla spelled out in sign?).  Sure the idea of the logo is to make it something recognizable and memorable and even convey everything joomla encompasses.  I'd be cautious in using a hand because it can be interpreted many ways.

Certain parts of the human body were believed to remain in a sympathetic union ,such as the Hand in some countries.

The hand was regarded as affording a valuable PROTECTION against ‘the evil eye’,especially if worn on the breast. In Southern Italy, the most popular charm is a representation of the hand in which the thumb is doubled under the forefinger, which is called ‘MANO FICA’,it is to believe that the same representation was even known in England.MANO CORNUTA,another representation of the hand in Napoli,is hung as a sign outside the house.

The hand, that member of the body which we employ more than any other for most actions whether ordinary, religious or magical,is both estensive and significant.

The hand has been regarded as a symbol of POWER.In Semitic usage an attack by a ghost on a human being was called ‘The Hand of the Ghost’.

The phrase ‘Gods hand’ means ‘his power’ in the Bible and in the Qur’an;and the fact that it is universally used as an instrument of BLESSING shows that it bears a relation to the supernatural.

As the hand signifies power,we find in Hindu mythology that the downcast hand means RENUNCIATION (represented in the gigantic figure of Budha Kyaikpun).

In ancient Egypt, the symbolism is found as early as 1570 BC for a stone carving of that periode, the RA, the sun’s disk is represented with numerous rays each terminating in a hand.In Jewish times, each of the fingers of God’s hand were regarded as having a special meaning, and the right hand was considered more important than the left by the Arabs.

Among the early Greeks, the hand was a symbol of significance and the Romans used it as a SACRED symbol.

The hand was also represented as sending down rays of light in the Christian religion, thus expressing the DIVINE BENEFICENCE shed upon the earth or on a person. It is shown in the act of BLESSING.

The significance of the OPEN HAND is almost universal, its meaning is to avert or to protect. It is used to stop the approach of any undesired person or thing. The open hand is used as an amulet in oriental countries,is called HAND OF THE PROPHET or HAND OF FATIMA.

The hand was also regarded as a symbol of JUSTICE in France. The upliefted hand was used to command SILENCE,while in religious rites, the laying of the hand was a BLESSING.HEALING BY TOUCH was already performed by the priest-physicians of ancient Egypt and Babylonia.

HOLY HAND is believed to remove deseases. The hand is a personal magnetis that some people have.

One of the most popular amulets used by the Arabs is the OPEN HAND,which like the MANI FICO in Southern Italy is to avert the ‘evil eye’.The symbolisme of the hand raised, palm outwards,to repel some threatened evil,is abvious and the 5 fingers represent the five most sacred persons in Islam, Muhammed,Ali,Fatima,Hasan and Husain.

ENGLISH EXPRESSIONS:
Healing hands - The breadth of a hand - Free hand - At first hand - By hand - From hand to Hand - Hands up - Hands off - In hands off - On one hand ... on the other hand - Show of hands - One hands full of - Shake hands - To hand in.
