I think, that fits. And to quote Brian in his first posting:
The idea can be turned into a masterpiece later.
Let the pros play with the hand-symbol - they already did a good job with the name, in spite of some other opinions here, who will love it as soon as "the baby" is growing

Re: New Logo
Just quckly running through some of the posts here since I put up my first "idea" and a lot of good suggestions have come up... Got me thinking - and while I had about 15 minutes or so while my out-of-town-company stepped out for a bit I threw something quick together...
Nothing even remotely close to a "masterpiece" by any stretch of the imagination - hell, it uses part of one of my old logos from about 2 years ago - but I think it might serve a purpose nonetheless.
What ever I usually come up with, I try to look at it from a marketing or branding viewpoint - one of those annoying habits - so just like the first one I submitted it has a "slogan" built in. Hopefully I'll be able to put more thinking and effort into another "offering" if I have the chance to do so before the logo/slogan/both are chosen.
Here goes....
The whole idea behind this rebranding is to take Joomla! to new heights, isn't it? Maybe something along this line could help? Just an idea....

Re: New Logo
Why a feet and why with a hole.
It is an old symbol, immediately understood in every culture, because you can find it as cave paintings or rock etchings wordwide. Sometimes the feet is drawn with an thorn in the palm. The hole or eye means an "opening" like a chance. Has nothing to do with anatomy;-)
Besides the funny ladys here, who want to entertain us, I have the impression people just play around with Photoshop, but without knowing what a symbol is.
A symbol is mainly a concept, understandable by everybody, who knows about this concept. Like a heart symbolizes love (My real name is Columbus!)
A logo is always a symbol. (Eureka!)
Conclusion: Some people here need optical devices.

So I guess none of us should have created any logos at all and rather just typed in our ideas...because when it comes to voting on the new logo, if that is the way it is actually going to work, we will not be voting on what we see but rather the idea behind it. So in a sense we are all voting for a logo that may not look anything like itself after the so-called pros get finished with it...but hey, it's the idea that counts!

I really like that elephant, but we should probably leave the elephant, and the donkey for that matter, to the political parties.

Hand print
For those who have shown interest in the hand print, this is the original picture.
I'am afraid the hole has nothing to do with any "eye" explanation, but is just a consequence of the natural curve of the palm when the hand was placed on the rock.

Re: New Logo
Another hand-variaton. I changed the hole in the middle to a heart for not getting in religious discussions
Also you can interpret the hand as a jumping manikin (okay, needs a little bit more phantasy )

i like your handlogo and your words about the background. I don´t like the "rosty blood red" very much und i don´t like "black" very much; other than for text. Also each one has (and may have) his or her own interpretation of the logo. My first assoziations with "your" Hand were Eric Clapton´s "I shot the sherrif" and Quentin Tarrantino in "From dusk till dawn". But maybe that´s a reason for my personal "red/black" aversion (or vice versa). The more you have to explain, the least it´s a good symbol imho. For the reasons you (and many others also) have already explained, i appreciate to take a hand as the basic principle. Peek´s is my personal favourite.
Best regards
Joern
