Web Hosts - any recommendations

Post by ozinm » Sat Feb 11, 2006 12:11 pm

Hi all,
has anyone got any recommendations for web hosts to use ?

All input thankfully received and special thanks to anyone who can provide any information for web hosts that
  • are based in the UK
  • don't require us to park our domain with them
  • Have UK Charity/Non-Proffit/Educational Institution discounts

I use Rochen to host four sites.  They're based in the UK, though their top notch tech support people are all over the world, UK, Australia, USA, are a few that I know.  I have no idea if they offer any non-profit discounts, but their multiple domain plans are very inexpensive.  For what it's worth, they host this site.

I put a lot of time looking into hosting for a club website. In the end i decided to go with http://www.siteground.com/.

I was original looking for a UK based company but found for price, features (including joomla install if you want) and 12000 MB webspace for just $5 plus I had trouble finding any negative reviews, I decided to give it a try.

I have only been with them 1 week so it's a bit early to say if they are OK but so far no complaints. As I am new to Joomla and CMS I also found there FAQ's on installing Joomla & Zoom clear and consice.

Again I haven't had cause to try it but the reviews raved about the speed and quality of support Siteground give.

If you decide to go for this option I would appreciate giving a referral as I will get extra free months for the referral (and that's not why this post sounds as if I'm plugging them).

Thanks,

Keith.

Hello,

http://www.siteground.com is cheap and is good if you have only one domain.  But if you go with multiple domains, then you have to pay some Addon domain fee.  That is the thing you need to consider.

Go with a host that offers many scripts and Control Panel utilities, not the price alone.

Some host companies charge a little bit higher fees but give you 6 allowable domains.

To get cheap domain, go to http://www.ipowerweb.com, $ 2.95/domain.  But it does not offer good scripts

@ wyzemoro

You removed my posts where I wrote "...we propouse that services ... a lot of that will be free..." (So NO COMMERCIAL)

But you even erased the other messages!

In this thread there are a lot of Commercial sites ...

If is not the same for all, is not a rule, and
if is not a rule, is not correct

Emiliano,

Sorry about the confusion here.  I'm (Ryan) the moderator of this forum.  I've been at a conference, but while there I was notified of the thread here.  I think that I actually sent a private message to you and the others here to either remove or edit their posts to make sure they followed our board's "no commercial posts" rule.  I didn't make the change/deletion of posts (at least i don't recall doing so), but I hope you're okay with the cleaned thread now.

Thanks,
Ryan

yes this is a touchy subject, recommending hosts in a non commercial space!

so no shpeal, but if you are interested check out the prices and content of the packages at Crucial Paradigm.  i design sites for non profit groups and host all my sites with them.  service and tech support over two or so years - fantastic, ive normally got a proper informed response for any tech query i have within 10 minutes.

Small addon to Siteground: you can have up to 5 domains parked on the same site.
The addon fee is if you want the domainnames to point to different directories.

Support is excellent (all responses under 10 minutes), they have cpanel and a lot of default scripts (although I advise against using them since most of the scripts aren't the latest version, including Joomla !).

Ps. I'm not from Siteground, I'm just a customer with a reselling account; therefore, no referral needed  ;)

That's true, but there's a difference between an addon domain and a parked domain.
Parked domains point to your root (meaning to the same place your original domain points too)  You can have 5 of these for free.
Addon domains point to a different directory than your original domain.  Like this you can have multiple sites on 1 hosting package.  Addondomains cost indeed $ 3.
But with a little manipulation of the index.php the above is also possible with the parked domains.

I'm based in the UK and I use http://www.nativespace.com. They are amongst the cheapest and there support is 24/7, and second to none. I have no connection apart from being a satisfied customer (and that ain't easy these days). My next joomla project is going to be hosted there as well.

They also have a free joomla install carried out, if requested, with every account. Plus full cpanel, etc...

I don't think they offer a discount, but if never hurts to ask.

Hope this helps,
Gareth

Hello Notaxa,

I have contacted Siteground regarding Addon charge.  This what Siteground replied:

Hello,

SiteGround charges 30 USD/ year for 1 Add-on slot and the price of the domain itself is not included.
The difference between Parked and Add-on domains is very huge: Parked domains just allow your visitors to access your website by using address different from your primary domain. With parked domains you only have one website no matter how many parked domains are set to point to it.
An add-on domain slot allows you to host more than one websites on one account. Each add-on domain points to a different site, which is located in a different directory on your account.

Please do not hesitate to contact us again if there is anything else we can assist you with.

Best Regards,

Support Team
SiteGround.com

Just to clairyfy,

Hi Tnpa,

just saw it on the site also.  They've increased the addon price enormously  :o
There's a free workaround:
in your index.php you can point the browser to a different directory according to the url used to access the site.
Like this you can have http://www.mysite1.com pointing to your root, mysite2.com pointing to root/home, mysite3.com pointing to root/start, ...
It's not really the same as having addon slots, but a lot cheaper and still usable.

The host we use (I'm not going to post it here because of the rules, but you can PM me if you want details) offers a very good hosting package (less space and bandwidth) for the same amount of money as siteground.  I have never used siteground, so I can't comment on them, but our host has been extremely reliable, their tech support is fantastic, and, when they upgrade their packages and/or software, you benefit from those upgrades (a lot of hosts will leave you stuck with whatever you signed up for).  Their domain names are incredibly low-priced ($4.95/year).

They are not based in the UK.  They are based in Canada and the US.

I don't know if they offer discounts for non-profit sites or not.  I suppose you could always ask them.

They also offer a very small free webhosting package, if that would be enough for you.
