Also you would surprised at the the number of CMS projects that exist out there that you only find out about when you do something like a name search.  There were a few times that names made it past inital stages, but than we had to scrub it as another CMS project (let alone IT project) already existed.

What a tactful, kind way to say you disagree with me :) I bet its not going to be "just this once" though! LOL
I foresee a long and happy future for the new CMS and would be very happy to be proven wrong about the name. ( I still don't know how to pronounce it though).

I feel reassured by so many people what saying Joomla! means in so many different languages and cultures. For a worldwide product that sounds like a good choice to me.

I am not a fan of the word I must say. Some reasons are:

  • Unlike Mambo Joomla is difficult to pronounce
  • I myself am not even sure about how to pronounce it in my own language or in English
  • People don't have an association with the word like the have with mambo and therefore perhaps chooses another CMS as the first selection is only by relation to the name. That’s even how I found Mambo!!!!!!
  • The fact that the name has a meaning is good, but on the other hand i a few months it won't have the same meaning
  • O followed by an M is difficult to pronounce in many languages and is done so very different of that reason

Well, it's too late now... I just had better hopes as I saw a lot better names in the suggesions forum.

Congratz with the new baby Joomla!

Hopefully she/he will grow up in a nice and peaceful environment.

Will you celebrate this event with a little gift for the relatives (Joomla! community)?

You could make a nice (brand new) template for this occasion ;)

PS: Here in Belgium, parents give chocolade beans to the family members.  Joomla! is a she/he?

When I look at any cms opensource system
as a corporate user
here is what I do

I look at how long the project has been around
I look at how widespread it is used
I look for an active user and development community
I will ask a question on the forum and see how fast it is replied to
I download and install it
I use it, if it installs easy

If it works and I think I understand it

as a user I DONT CARE WHAT ITS CALLED

developers, designers, marketers, people close to the code CARE(and they should)

*ambo passed all the tests, and from what I can see in this continued community

JOOMLA! shall pass the tests.

This is a very active vibrant community, thats what makes it so good.
;D

okay here is the situation.

a newbie heard about the beauty and how easier a CMS to maintain. So he googling around and found several sites offering free CMS.

But he was looking for a comparison site for CMS to help him choose. So he goes to http://www.opensourcecms.com and http://www.cmsmatrix.org. Well, what did he found?

A dozens of CMS with a name which make him smile and laugh. Never the less, he tried the CMS one by one. And sometime after that he found a cms with interactivity, simple yet flexible. Guess what, after that he told his friend he found a good CMS called joomla! His friends laugh and laugh at him for the sound of the name is too stupid. But a week after that they all using joomla on their website and they even promoted it to others.

Between you and me... is the name sound stupid? i think yes at first. but we get over it.
Is the product not good? you tell me.
Can we stand tall and promote the product? for me, yes why not? but different strategies needed for different audience. :)

Maybe for corporate - let them see, touch, use, feel the power of joomla! before introducing its name. Let them see the product first. not the name.

Children, did not our moms teach us to not to judge a book by its cover? ;)

I really don't see what the problem is. On first glance I came over all "What the?!?!?" but after a few minutes really came to appreciate the name.

As others have mentioned, it'll hardly be the only serious software project with a less-than-hardcore name. Google alone is proof of this. As is Yahoo!, certain products from the guys over at 37Signals and Monster.com.

Embrace it. Hardcore and tough-sounding just comes off as macho and gauche.

My first reaction was much like yours, only I haven't done to the "get over it" phase. I hope it will happen, cause I am very disappointed.
I find the new name silly at best. It would have been perfect if we were speaking about a chocolate bar.

at first time i read the name, one think cross my mind.."what the...."..
its not sounds good enough...but it just a first impression for a name...
whats more important is let power in simplicity (oops..that was mambo slogan)..maybe let the power behind the stupid name reveals..
we can give a commercial name that can attract the public or corporate to use this software yet in the end it will boil down to the spirit of the open source...
if some people call the name sounds stupid, the stupid name that bring us together here...for anything else you got Mastercard, for this true open source spirit..priceless.

So,

Are people called Joombers now?

Do we use mods coms and joombots?

when we insert an image tag into content will it be a {joombimage} or a {jmbimage}?

Is it a time for Joombilation?

The community and core are going to have to come up with a whole new dialect of puns, word fragments, concatenations and other abuses of the english language to give the name force and appeal, to take possession of it and make it theirs.

At the risk of appearing stupid, which is the correct pronunciation of joomla?

JOOM-luh
JOOM-lay
joom-LUH
joom-LAY

i.e. which syllable gets the emphasis and how is the last syllable pronounced?

thanks,
Steve

Joomla! is the phonetic spelling of the Swahili word Jumla so the two syllables rhyme with zoom and car respectively.

This thread makes no sense to me as the name has been chosen. IMHO it doesn't matter what the name is as long as the product is good, and Joomla only needs to prove to be the best, what will not be difficult at all. So let's get down to work!

Great name! Of course it is surprising, weird, unusual, and will cause smiles and bewilderment! That's the point! This is an entirely new brand in the SW marketplace. As I suggested in my earlier post, the name must mean this specific piece of software, and nothing else. It is in effect a globally unique identifier. Also, it is only two syllables, easy to pronounce, and very difficult to confuse with anything else. Well, except maybe Jamba Juice, but that has positive connotations.

Excellent choice!
