To all community members the following request:

If you think you experience bugs in the new release, please post them on the Q&T (Quality & Testing) forum http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/board,198.0.html so we can pick up from there.

Thanks, and regards, Robin

Upgrade desaster

Post by lausianne » Tue Jun 06, 2006 9:11 am

I just upgraded from 1.0.8 to 1.0.9 by copying all files onto my Joomla site. Apparently it worked for everybody else ...
... but ...

now, as administrator, when creating new content and in other sections, the big buttons won't work anymore (Apply, Save, Cancel, Upload, etc.)

If I don't get this to work again quickly, it's a DESASTER !

Thanks for your help!

(Surprised no one else had that problem. I've done a backup, so I hope I can at least get back to the old version.)

It looks an old problem ... in administrator you have to log with the same url that is in your configuration.php (live site) file.
Remove it (or add if its the case) from the administrator url login! Logout first!

Thanks for the quick response. Since there are several urls in config.php, which one do you refer to?

I haven't changed config.php, or the way I accessed the admin page. So why would it not work anymore?

Meanwhile I copied a few files back and forth (to make sure I've got all the new files on the site)
Now the buttons work again!

But: the now content editor fails to load correctly, see attached file. Desaster.

UPDATE:  I copied all files again, 3rd try, and now it seems to work, finally! I guess I need a proper ftp program. Filezilla & Total Commander may not be sufficient for such delicate jobs ...  :P

For that reson, I cannot try it out anymore. Im doing a return to 1.08 until this problem is solved, either on Joomla end or SMF end.

Thanks for the heads up.. I had not noticed that but after your post I went back and looked and am having the same problem. Everyone is a Guest now, even when signed in..

This is due to the fact that docman is providing a link with this `&Itemid=` as Itemid has no value it is cuasing the errors you see.
If you add even `Itemid=0` to the link the errors disappear

Did about 5 or 6 site updates last night -
Oddly, the 2 largest sites I did (my own and one other): I was left (for a few minutes)
with a fully functional web site with no content!

Yea. Webpage came up and in the main body of the site was the
message: "there is nothing to display"

Dove into the admin area and looked at menu items. Nothing looked out of sorts.
Unpublished and re-published main menu Home item - "Main_menu" (I think)
and within seconds everything came back to normal.

It was a gut-wrenching 30 seconds let me tell you!

@rey: What is the link parameter "Unique itemid" for a link to static content in the menu for?

justinw wrote:@rey: What is the link parameter "Unique itemid" for a link to static content in the menu for?

By default if you create multiple `Link - Static Content` to the same Static content, you will see that url produced will use the same Itemid value.

Which for example means that the same modules will appear for those links, this is because to the system the two menu items are the same.

Using `Unique Itemid` the link created will produe different Itemids in the links meaning the system will treat the two menu items as being totally different - even if it links to the same content

OK thanks for that. Who do you think would need to use something like on a site? Or, rather, what type of site would need it?

Always happens on the enterprise sites though!

I guess the question is: Why did it happen and why did it (apparently)
fix itself within minutes?

Has Joomla evolved to the point where it is self-repairing?

seems to be editor specific -- back-end content edits fine.
Cleared all caches. No change.
Will try a different editor.

Thanks again!
Filezilla does work, so does Total Commander. Only after transferring such an amount of files, I found both not to be 100% reliable, or I just don't know how to use them right, so that all files are properly transferred. Filezilla shows error messages somtimes, and then I'm not sure if the file has been transferred or not ... Total Commander likes to disconnect once in a while ...

However, finally I managed with a combination of both.

Editor: you mean the Joomla editor? JCE. Best html editing, as far as I've seen. Adds a huge space between paragraphs when editing in normal mode, though, which makes it almost unusable. I must find a solution to that, or another editor. That's for another forum ...

@soupn / @rey:
Similar thing seems to have happened with Cafepress Component & Jobline ShowJobs module.

I modified frontend.php as discussed here: http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,66935.0.html

Now all is well with the Jobline module for me.

@rey: any idea if there is a risk with this modification?

The safe mode patch is not available yet....
but by comparing files, I've been able to copy  all required changes for the patch.
So in attachement, only the files that are changed for the safe mode patch.
(get "safeJoomla" 1.08 and repatch with attachement)

The search in 1.0.9 seems to be giving problems

Post by anoop » Wed Jun 07, 2006 5:35 am

I seem to be having having problems with the search on my site. With 1.0.8 the search worked great, but now, it hardly seems to get results. See http://www.focusweb.org .
I don't know what sort of bug this is? any ideas???

With all the success listed here I can't wait to update.  Language is an issue on some of my sites and I have been out of the loop lately - is that a blog anyone can access referred to below?  or something for developers (I just use the great stuff you developers develop)  Julie

stingrey wrote:Important note for Non-English Joomla! users
Those not using the default english language file

A change in a language definition means that the text in the mod_whosline module will not output correctly:
http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,66501.0.html

Basically Language File maintainers will need to create a new language file for 1.0.9
Will also blog about this shortly

It's public.  Just click on "Developers" in the main menu along the top of the Joomla site, and then on the left side click "Developers' Blog".  Here is a direct link, and the post about language files in 1.0.9 is the first one listed as of this writing.

I'm not sure if this is directly related to the update, or to the language files (I'm using the english file only).

Anyway, since the update (I haven't checked this detail immediately) I've got a problem with utf-8 characters.
On a page (everything utf-8) I display texts from files (unicode) which display correctly, including special characters (french & german).

Some text is displayed directly from the contents of a database (all utf8_unicode_ci). Now this doesn't work anymore: in IE, instead of the special character (à) and the following characters a weird (arabic?) character is displayed.
In firefox only the special characters are replaced by a question mark in a diamond.
(see attached screenshot, please - actually copy/pasted into Word from FF, and then screenshot)

Now,  if I manually change the coding in FF from utf-8 to iso, the database contents are displayed correctly, while the text from the files doesn't.  ???

I've tried all I could think of for several hours, changing character sets back & forth etc., to no avail. It used to work fine, and other than the update I haven't changed much.

Any idea? Thank you!

Just a remark ...
The button download Joomla at left in home page ... Should be 1.09 now (instead of 1.08)
