New church needs to put up Joomla site

Post by open2talk » Fri Feb 17, 2006 8:32 am

Hello,

I am brand new to this forum.  And, we are starting a new church in the Washington, DC area.  We want to have a content management site put up so someone told me about Joomla.  Is too difficult for a non-tech to update and then maintain a template like this ... http://www.jupaki.mamplates.net/ ... or this ...  http://www.yuki.mamplates.net/?

We want something that looks nice and can do things like blogging, calendar, newsletter sign up, audio streaming, articles, discussion boards, contact forms, etc.  But, I couldn't believe what some people wanted to charge for that ... and then ... hit you with a $99 a month fee to maintain it.  Someone told me to host them on a host site like siteground.com that can support Joomla.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Dan

Hi,

You can see for some free Joomla Templates at joomlaya.com.
And as for the host, siteground is a good choice. Recently they have released a Joomla Tutorial  - > http://siteground.com/tutorials/joomla/index.htm

Hearing you say that they charge a lot and add $99 a month on top makes we want to get into the webdesigning business!  My experience is that once the site is setup and running everything can be maintained by non-techs.  However, it would be good to have somebody around to maintain it if something goes horribly wrong (disk crash, database failure, etc).

We (kcqem.org) use bluehost.com who has done a fine job for us.  We have more disk space and bandwidth than we can currently use.  It has Fantastico (which helps install lots of softwares) so it was pretty easy to setup.  Once the
template is setup you shouldnt have to go back and edit it too much.

Joomla comes with contacts, blogging, a calendar can be added through a component, and newsletters for us are handled using DADA mail program.  I dont know how audio streaming works, but we use mp3 and Rm files and they seem to stream okay on most computers whose software (WMV player or RM player) or set up properly.  Discussion boards can be added using SMF (simplemachines.org)

What kind of church are you starting?  Are you denominational?  Where are you located?
