We went through and checked over the rules not that long ago, this one did catch our eye, but after some thought we have left it in as it serves a purpose.
First of all, we realize some link to FAQ's etc, but we have allowed people to do this. (moderators CAN see the need to be balanced in how the rules are applied.)
Ok, so why is this rule good?
User A posts a poll on some issue that is dear to their heart. He/she then adds it to his sig and promotes users to come on over and vote etc etc. Now while the poll may be ok, and we're happy to let it exist, we can use this rule to stop User A stirring up things even more.
There are other scenario's but this rule can be used if needed by the moderators.
It's a shame we have to have rules, but a minority of users are here to harass and take advantage of other users. Sadly if we (moderators) ask someone nicely to remove a certain link, adjust their sig, a very small minority refuse, and will only comply if we back up common-sense/concern for the greater community with a rule.
Can I take this opportunity to thank all the hard working moderators who keep these forums safe and friendly. Their job is one that often goes unappreciated, and few realize just how much work it involves. No one sees the dirty work, like the multiple spammers we ban and delete threads from each and every day. Good work everyone!
