Stop Spam Adverts in the Demo Site

Post by romit » Tue Jun 27, 2006 6:22 pm

For the last few days.. I have been actively monitoring Spam Google Advertisements on the demo site..

Guys it might seem that Traffic is very low on the demo site but it actually is quite high..

So I propose a few solutions to stop this kind of abuse..

1. (The most obvious one) The spammers are using the Banner Component of Joomla and putting their code in it..
Solution : Edit the Banner Component Code/Database so that it does not allow edition/delete of the default text.. or create a new Banner

Once I deleted their Clients and Banners a few times.. They Resorted to a new thing..

2. They are using custom user modules to insert advert code
Solution : Edit the database/joomla code so that new User modules cannot be created

3. Report the spammers google advert id. to google.. But this takes time to achieve and the spammers are going to get another one in no time

4. Remove the banner module position.. altogether from the template.. But this isn't going to solve since.. they are just going to assign their code in another module position..

This has far reaching implications. since the code inserted in the user module or banner component can be of malicious nature...
And I hope I dont have to elaborate on Malicious.

Hope that the core dev team has some time to apply these changes.. specially 1 and 2
To stop innocent site visitors from being harrased..

I understand that these custom stuff have to be done everytime when a new version of Joomla is released..
But this is all in a good cause..  :)

EDIT: I forgot to mention.. These guys are online 24*7.. No matter at what time of the day I delete their code ..
they replace it with a new one within 5mins..

Nah!
Who cares about them? They're not in my way, Im not in theirs. You know some of these people live in parts of the world that don't have as much food and money as us, and sometimes this is truly the only way their family would survive.

My solution:
Leave them be, they're not in our way. They're providing useful links with adsense to us and they're making money when we click one. I sometimes purposely click on the ads just to let myself know that Im helping another person live somewhere on the other side of the globe. This is an alternative way to earn money for them, rather than working for 50cents for Nike.

May God be with all of you.

I used to be one of these people untill I stopped and saw what th problem was... for which I can only appologise.
The way they can keep clearing out and making new ones is the fact that we use scripts. All you need is a spare pc and it can automatically do it. so the way to beat them? Simple. Report, report and report. Google will instantly ban them once they get the message. The second best way is to beat them is to do the exact same as mambo. Delete the banner module entirely from the demo site.

Much luck wished....

colddog, just because they have a non-US TLD in their mailadress or they claim to be from some small, poor island, does not mean that those are really non-US citizens with little money and all. I very recently read a figure, that still 70% of all spam world wide is from the US and I doubt that they are excluding the joomla demo site. Also, this just promotes lazyness. Why should I work when I can "hack" a dozen high traffic websites, but my banners on it and live from the clicks. Clicks, which have been produced through the hard work of other people. Thats as unethical as working in a factory for Nike, producing shoes for 50 cent and selling them for $200 in the US. So its not okay. I would like to see this come to an end.

The problem is, this is a demo site and if you don't want the people to be able to deface it, you have to reduce functionality, which is equal to closing down the site.

Would it be possible to install some kind of captcha at the admin login interface?
