Animal Rescue/Adoption Site

Post by seve » Wed Dec 07, 2005 10:47 pm

Hey folks,

I'm going to be starting a project for a local non-profit animal rescue group and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to implement an animal adoption database with pages for each individual animal that can be easily managed and changed by front-end users? Has anyone done anything similar?

Thanks!

Hi seve,

I am actually doing something very similar for a rescue/shelter. Have you taken a look at the new Community Builder RC2? Easy to customise tabs and information on individuals. But you are looking to have individual profiles for the animals? Would you look to have certain people set up as front end admins to add animals? I guess you could have each animal as a member, and the admin/moderator could add them from the front end. It will allow for a discription, you could have different lists of animals, a blog for each, extra photos using the Zoom plugin. Worth a look.

We are currently using PetFinder for our available adoptions, and I have that wrapped. I am using Community Builder as we have memberships to the shelter, but I can see it set up for what you want to do.

I will be interested to see what you come up with.

Thanks FerretLife. I've only peripherally heard of Community Builder RC2. I did want to have individual profiles for each animal with description info, photos and possibly a blog. Maybe I can have it linked to the Petfinder pages for each? Sounds like that might be the best option. I'd love to see what you're working on as well! :)

I am in the last phase of moving our local shelter to joomla. I simply created two categories, Available Cats and Available Dogs, and each Animal is a content item. That way, shelter management can easily add new animals and move the adopted ones to the Alumni category. Let me know if you want to see the site.

As a side note, does anyone have an idea how to easily add content items like those to petfinder.com? would be easier to have joomla keep petfinder.com up-to-date.

I simply wrap PetFinder in the site. Using PetFinder I feel is important. Many people find us through PetFinder, rather than the other way around.

I have a dog rescue.  We simply have 'Available dogs' with writeup and photos and once adopted, the category is changed to 'Happy Tails' and listing is simply moved. All can be done from the front end.
