Just got spam on osm only email?

Post by artful » Mon Nov 06, 2006 8:41 am

Gday All
I Just recieved an unsolicited email to an address that I have only ever given out to the open source matters team. In fact I don't remember even posting here before. The address is osm@my domain name

the email is for joomla support and hosting from an Indian based hosting company
"******- Jomla Hosting Our Servers are optimised for Joomla CMS. - A4 Rag Villa, Pune MH India."

Any ideas what gives? Surely OSM/Joomla haven't gone to the dark side? There's no indication if they paid (sponsored?) get my email from OSM

Regards Nick

Mod note: removed reference to provider.

In your forum profile, you have not chosen to hide your email address. As a result a registered member may have gathered your email address manually.

Feel free to email me any details that might lead me to track down the user responsible though. We/OSM does not sell, misuse or allow 3rd parties access to your personal details.

I've tracked the user down, lets see what they have to say or what action we can take.

Yep I got it as well - I only use the address here, thought I'd be safe . As much as I hate spam it just so happened I am in the mmarket for some joomla hosting. I searched their name in this forum to see if anyone had anything to say about them. I know I know.... I shouldn't encourage the spammers by going to their sites.

This is still unacceptable behavior. We will not allow the community to be taken advantage of.... but all the best on your hosting quest.

This is from their TOS LOL

3) Customer is expressly prohibited from sending unsolicited bulk mail messages ("junk mail" or "spam"). This includes, but is not limited to, bulk-mailing of commercial advertising, information announcements, and political tracts. Such material may only be sent to those who have specifically requested it.

Ok, let's wait for a reply from them, before we publicly castigate them :)

I would strongly suggest you look at rochen hosting ... they do the joomla.org hosting and have been an absolute pleasure to deal with every step of the way.... :)

I'll second that.  My personal site is with one of those "budget hosts". I have found that budget hosting companies just mean that they oversell space on the server and you have more problems. I can not count the number of times that I have had to submit a ticket because the server was too full and I was unable to upload anything. Rochen is an A+ company, so you would be satisfied there. Just my 2 cents. :)

Ok I broke the cardinal rule and paid a spammer. Paid $6 and got nothing. My own stupid fault. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH *************  No response to emails and the phone number does not work.

I will be going with Rochen.

Whois info for ************

I have also PM'd user netrockers via this forum as he seems to be the source of this spam but I have had no response.

I recieved this spam too and I am hopping mad about it.

It is unforgivable behaviour for a member of this site to harvest email addresses we have made visible here for the purpose of communicating in good faith with other forum members. And being that the majority of us here are web developers who already spend so much of their time managing unwanted spam on our servers it comes as an added insult.

If this member is unethical enough to pick through our entire members database then for all we know they are unethical enough to pass the list they have gathered here along to other spammers.

I hope you deal with this severely and ban the offender.

Please keep us informed of the outcome Brad.

Cheers,
Zana

I replied to the 1businesshosting spam!

I did the bad thing like Jimmbot and now I'm testing their services and it works! they installed joomla for me, they reply very quick to my mails and the response time of my site is very good in frontend and backend...
the test site is: http://www.lucfayard.com, it's really a test site!
the normal site , by 1&1 is : http://www.infotechart.com; I'm thingking of leaving 1&1 because the response time in backend is very very slow...

I'm closing this thread.

I would not touch a provider that engaged in practices like this though, and we're not going to give them anymore publicity either.
