Very interesting developments today. I like the idea of a spoon rather than fork (copyright 2005 Peter Russell). Please let us know exactly what is at stake - I definitely support anything that the dev team wants to do.
My one major concern is the forums. The doc team is doing a great job creating a printed reference but the forums serve as the living word.
Cheers and thanks for leading us in the right direction.

Guys and Gals I'm happy you have made a stand.
This kind of behavior cannot be tolerated by the Open Source Community as a whole, and even more so by a project I use I'm behind you 100% as I am sure the rest of REAL community will be too. We will fight them on Internet, we will fight them in the forums, but they will never take our Mambo!
Viva La Mambo!
P.S. Good to see a spell checker

I think gsb's concern about the trove of information available on the current mambo forum is very valid.
Another thing that concerns me in this is that there will be hundreds of mambo users that don't really know what's going on, and from lack of understanding will remain with Mambo.
I am concerned at how long it will take to rebuild the community surrounding the Mambo project. A dynamite product is only part of the solution.
But time will tell...

Re: Mambo Open Source Development Team - Letter to the community - Discussion
I apologize because I am most likely overreacting. We may all be overreacting.
Miro's intentions may be ok but this is not a good sign. I have known the core developers of Mambo to be pretty darn clear headed and would not expect them to go off like this unless there was something serious at stake.
We have seen Miro putting together a Foundation of their own hand-picked members to somehow coordinate the future of Mambo. They also want to spearhead the accreditation process for Mambo. There is also the copyright issue that was mentioned in the developer's open letter. We have all been watching this silly power struggle for a few months now.
May the best software win.

Re: Mambo Open Source Development Team - Letter to the community - Discussion
yup both points are pretty worrying - in my ideal world I'd like the outcome of this to be that the 'split' scares the hell out of Miro and a more responsible approach is gained from them, whereby they meet all the core teams demands, so in the end no split would be apparent to end users (eg still use the same forums, sites etc)
However, I can't imagine things have got to this point if that type of negotiation was still possible.
Of course its going to be pretty apparent to people who regularly frequent the forums that there is no core dev team in the Miro/Mambo version and I guess there's going to be a lot of disgruntled people making their thoughts clear in the forums to such an extent that even infrequent visitors are going to notice whats up.
On a personal front I'm willing to sign up to help in what ever way I can, my component (mosForms) will most certainly be following wherever the core team go, and whatever other assistance I can give just needs to be asked for

I think we're ok, mambohut. The code is GPL'd, the dev team is all in agreement about their direction and development on the new version continues. This is just a turn of political events.

I believe the Core Team knows more what happens behind the doors and has thought long time to not overacting.
To help them everybody should put this information on their site, as i did, this also shows that the community ( i guess most ) are behind the Core team.

I believe that they are telling us as much as they possibly can at the moment. There *are* legal issues to be considered and giving too many details in public may jeopoardise whichever direction they are planning to take.
I am frustrated by the silence, though to me, it speaks loud and clear that all is not well, contrary to what the "Good Miro Folks" would like us to believe.

You have my support guys
It is a bit weird how all the people involved with the foundation seem to have dissapeared off the main boards.
I just hope something can be done so you guys can keep working/using the mamboserver sites/forums/projects/documentation etc
I know miro own the domains, but what about all the content etc, do they own that too. It would be good for the project if it could remain under the mambo name and banner, but this might not be possible I think the foundation might have something to think about now with such a public uproar and we may well see it materialise as something else with the main guys involved. At least I hope so!

I am behind you guys (core team and supporting co-mutiny ). You made me proud today. Mambo is much more than just a copyrighted name. I have said it many many times before, and want to just take this opportunity to say it again: Thanks to each and every one of you who has contributed to time and brain cells to make this project as great as it is today, I am really proud to be part of this phenomenon and to have had the chance to come into contact with such a diverse, colorful and talented bunch of humans. .

Very glad to see a united front on the part of the dev teams. I would certainly like to help in any way possible. This certainly has not been an easy thing for the developers to deal with and we all owe immensely for standing together and doing what is best for the community.
Cheers guys,

I know who is, and trust the core dev team. I just can't say the same about Miro. This is sad news, as it will inevitably split this community, but I suspect the majority will be joining you very soon.
Good Luck guys, maybe its time for a "rebel" CMS
Perhaps its time to start coming up with a new name, and taking this project forward.

Re: Mambo Open Source Development Team - Letter to the community - Discussion
Very well done !
Good to see such a "professional" start - it bodes well for the future.
Said my "goodbyes" at the "old" forum and look forward to meeting old & new friends here.
Like others, I'm ready to assist in any way I can when your call comes out for help and/or comment.
Please let us know when/where/how we can start sending our money, as this thing will not run on goodwill alone. A nice [Donate] link at top of new site would be great.
I think that an "Official Statement" for this "new project" (not the "Letter to the Community" which covered what happened with Miro & why, but what we hope - and know - is going to happen next) should be drafted, commented on (if need be) and then made public, so that other mambo related people and forums can be advised, mambo sites can link to the Statement, and we can start the building of a new community.
It shouldn't need to be too specific, just a statement of broad goals etc.
PS: You have Rey Gigataras listed twice in your "Letter". Does this mean he works twice as hard ?

Re: Mambo Open Source Development Team - Letter to the community - Discussion
Hello Everyone,
Just a few notes regarding the change of server which was mentioned on the forum -
The website and forum have now been moved over to the new server. We felt it important that we did this now just in case Open Source Matters receives a large spike in traffic over the coming hours and days. E.g. if the site gets mentioned on slashdot.org or something similar.
Just a few notes regarding the server move -
207.210.68.122 – If you see the site pointing towards this IP address when you ping it, then fantastic. Everything has propagated over to the new server for you.
67.18.142.2 – If you see the site pointing towards this IP address when you ping it, then the MySQL information is being pulled from a remote server, so the site will still load but may be a little slower than normal for you.
Once the DNS has fully propagated over to the new server then everyone should see the website pointing to: 207.210.68.122.
Please let us know if you are experiencing any problems and we shall look into them for you.
Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the entire development team on taking this brave step in the interests of the Mambo community.
Thank you for reading
- Chris

Re: Mambo Open Source Development Team - Letter to the community - Discussion
What a great equaliser this is - everybody starting again from post #1
I am both relieved and very happy with this new development in the Miro vs community saga.
I've seen the demise of good open source projects before, due to similar antics, and was very concerned about the future of Mambo. I'm not now, thanks to you.
I will do what I can to help when its called for. For now, I just wish to say, "good on you" and thank you for having the vision and courage to take this community forward.
More power to the community!

Re: Mambo Open Source Development Team - Letter to the community - Discussion
It's like I'm witnessing a revolution. My exposure to open source was first with Linux, I was astonished to see something like that come out of this idea... I started reading more about it with Free As In Freedom and The Cathedral and the Bazaar. One of the very essence of the GPL is the ability to fork like this.
I love Mambo but also feared where it was going. I'm in full support and can offer bandwidth (mirrors whatever) and a perky attitude. Whatever name we as a community give to this project, I'm excited and have wet myself with giddiness to be able to say "I was there man, I was right there!"

What about the name? I think it's very important because Miro won't let you/us use "Mambo".
Will you call it TANGO? MamboGPL? MamboGNU?
Seriously, "Opensourcematters" sounds like a last minute choice.
On the other hand we should think about something, to let know "average Joe" about this. Many people doesn't check the Announcements.

Tango was a possibility I was considering for rebadging my own indie fork. It may be appropriate for the independent (non-Miro) version of Mambo.

Well, I've been a busy pilgrim today, but I'm finally here on this shiny new forum. Good work to all involved gettin' us a place to chat about this.
I gotta say right now, really well worded, solid and level headed statement from the core. You guys sure made those Miro varmits look like the travelling side show they are.
I'm continuin' my vigil to get the word out on this, and I've linked back to these forums for wanderin' pilgrims to make their discussion.
Also sent a smoke signal out to several big sites that I'm sure would find it right dandy to hear of this turn of events. Definitely newsworthy.
Ok, it's back to the prairie for this ol' cowboy.
Thankye kindly,
The Lone Mamber
p.s. Oh and btw, if it doies come to rebadgin this here project, let's please drop the dancing metaphors.

Great job guys!!! I am very happy to see this happen and to see the community reacting the way it is is just wonderful. I am behind the developers 100%!
I just submitted the story to /. so hopefully it will get approved and the world can see this and take a stance against Miro.
Thanks,
Brett
