Gentlemen.
With the greatest of respect ... I'm probably posting to the wrong part of your Forums and I may be a Newbie but ...
On your homepage it's not possible to Login or Register ... Curious?
As you'll no doubt all be aware, one can Login (or Register) on both the Forum or Extensions subdomains,
and on the Help subdomain one can Login too (http://help.joomla.org/component/option,com_login/Itemid,79/) but there's NO chance to Register there? ... Curious?
I actually found a chance to Register on http://forum.joomla.org/index.php?action=register where it stated ... 'User name is required for SMF'??
What on earth is SMF?? (Remember folks, this is an un-registered Newbie here!)
The form also asked for a Password but DIDN'T specify the need for it to be at least eight characters! ... Curious?
Over on the page http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_registration/task,register/
the required Password DIDN'T require an eight character minimum ... Curious?
And, having Registered there, activated my account, and subsequently Logged in, my user name now wasn't recognised in the Forum ("username doesn't exist") ... Curious?
What's not stated on either the Forum or Extensions Registration pages or anywhere else on your Web site is the fact that one needs to Register separately on each subdomain!! ... Curious?
All totally small points I realise, but dealing with these small points could perhaps make for a more professional Web presence ... and possibly prevent mass Newbie confusion!
Cheers!
Swami Neelamber

Swami -
I think you meant LADIES and Gentleman. Or, are you just assuming women would never create such confusion?
Good comments. It is easy to forget how confusing it all gets. It was good of you to offer the feedback.
Other than providing a valuable look at what it's like from a new person's perspective, are you okay? In other words, are you able to logon to the Extensions and Forum areas? These are indeed two separate IDs - you can make them the same value, or different, but the security is not integrated.
You shouldn't require a Help System ID.
If you are ready to get learning, I recommend clicking the Help button at top, downloading and reading the User's Guide you will find there. Also, pay attention to the FAQ, lots of good stuff in there and learn to use the Search - it will be your best friend!
Let us know if you are being stopped from moving forward and WELCOME to Joomla!. It is good to have someone with your perceptive skills join us. When you are ready, you will likely be assimilated into the Documentation Team. With a first post like that, you are destined to help us with improvements!
Take care!
Amy

Re: Initial Registration on this Web site ...
Hi Swami - and welcome to Joomla! Community Forum
Your observations are correct. You need to register seperately at Forum and Extensions sites.
These are seperate subsites with seperate userbase.
The SMF (Simple Machines Forum) is a seperate forum software which runs the Joomla! Community Forum.
This software probably require the 8-characters password. The Extensions Directory on the subdomain extensions.joomla.org is a joomla! installation and use the joomla! requirements for password. Different software, different requirements
True - it probably could be made more clear that seperate registration is required for the different sites in the joomla! family.
Just in case you should visit Joomla! Developer forge http://forge.joomla.org/sf/sfmain/do/home then this have its own registration too.
Thanks for taking your time to express your experiences of your first visits here.
