United Nations Development Programme - India

UNDP is the UN's global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life.

We are on the ground in 166 countries, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges. As they develop local capacity, they draw on the people of UNDP and our wide range of partners.

World leaders have pledged to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, including the overarching goal of cutting poverty in half by 2015. UNDP's network links and coordinates global and national efforts to reach these Goals. Our focus is helping countries build and share solutions to the challenges of:

    * Democratic Governance
    * Poverty Reduction
    * Crisis Prevention and Recovery
    * Energy and Environment
    * HIV/AIDS
    * UNDP helps countries attract and use aid effectively. In all our activities, we promote the protection of human rights and the empowerment of women.

Advocation Reproductive Choices

In 2005, a number of like minded organizations came together in India to form a coalition: Advocating Reproductive Choices, acronym ARC, so that concerted and sustained efforts could be taken up to enhance contraceptive accessibility and expand contraceptive choices in the country.
Though, women and couples can easily be helped to delay, space or prevent pregnancies as per their individual choices, there are over 284 lakh couples (2001) in the country who have an Unmet Need for Family Planning. Annually, over 55 lakh unwanted children are born. Additionally, an estimated 67 lakh induced abortions take place every year, mostly unsafe.
Over 260 lakhs births take place annually, but only about 53 lakh pregnant women receive full antenatal care.
With over 1.32 lakhs women dying annually in our country due to pregnancy related causes, and 25 times more women suffering chronic life threatening and serious illness due to consequences of pregnancy, just by preventing unwanted pregnancies through use of a range of safe and reliable contraception, thousands of women and their families can be helped.
Simultaneously, this will also help to sustain the ever increasing population in the country estimated to be over 111 crores by July 2007, an increase of 75 crores in just 57 years since 1951! Already, the challenges are many, including the threat due to diminishing natural resources…
Awareness and availability of a number of safe, reliable and affordable contraceptive methods would enhance choices and result in voluntary acceptance of family planning. ARC is striving to work towards this.
