Are there a lot of church's that use Joomla?

Post by galaxywd » Tue Jan 16, 2007 2:39 am

We have a non profit org we donated a site to. We have currently found it's easier to host on a virtual dedicated or true dedicated platform to run the Joomla system. But, the expense is higher than the church can afford. Take a look at this site http://www.cruxstudentministry.org Let me know if you think if this site should switch to Joomla. It requires a calendar system, and a photo/media gallery. Are they any extensions out there that could work similar. Hope to hear your thoughts.

you can do everything on that site and more with J!  As far as price goes, there are free servers out there that will run Joomla, so cost should not be an issue.  I'm not sure if that answered your question or not.

There are many affordable hosts that are Joomla! friendly.  Check this thread: http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,6856.0.html for a pretty good list of Joomla! optimized hosts.

You should be able to find at least a handful under $10 a month... nothing near virtual dedicated prices.

I am using Joomla to create a website for the church I attend.  I think Joomla has a lot to offer churches.  I like the ability to have people in the different ministries add their own content.  With me being the webmaster this frees up my time considerably.  In addition there are a lot of features that I can use to make a very useful site for members and non members.  I started from knowing nothing about Joomla and little about other aspects of building a web page and now I am almost ready to go Live with a new site for our church.  This CMS makes managing a site so much more doable for anyone.

I too am setting up a Joomla site to replace the exiting church site. (demo is found at clc.czenkus.com the template is a RocketTheme)

My question to VanWinn is "What method are you using to allow users to add content to their own area?"

Second - I have tried several modules to limit content shown on ministry pages to only those ministries.  Any recommendations?

Thanks
Gary

I wish I had a good solution to the problem of allowing access based on user.  Right now I have additional content available to registered members.  Those with higher level access have access to edit all content on the site and additional content available to them.  They just need to log in and click on the edit button on each page. The site has no "private" access areas (ie. Elder/Deacon meeting areas).

I am a little unclear as to what you are asking here.  Give me some more explanation and I will be glad to help if I can!

Hi

i have been developing a church website and we are using siteground which is not too expensive, works out about £7 per month. As regards to users accessing different sections i have used JACL plus and community builder. I think JACL plus would do it on its own but i wanted to future proof the website in case the next church leader wanted some flexibility. These modules have worked at ensuing different groups have access and editing rights to certain pages. My only problem is when you want to add someone to more than two groups, I'm working on that!!!

Yes,  I think joomla will be able to do it.  I am working on redesigning my church website, and I am using joomla to do it. I've done a lot of research comparing different tools, and joomla hit me as the best option.

Also, check out dreamhost for webhosting - for non-profits, it's free, and they give you their best plan.
