Looking for development team

Post by inator » Sun Mar 04, 2007 4:39 pm

I'm looking for participants in porting the popular GPL Phpauction application to Joomla as a component.  Anyone interested?  Many in this Joomla community seem to be interested in a native auction component.

Hi ! well, I really don't have the skills to do that but I confirm that this would be very very usefull !
Like you said , it seems that many of us want or need an auction component for joomla so if I can help you advertise ...!

I'm still new with joomla and I think its great . I tried the virtuemart and its also great , but I really need to sell my stuff withan  auction process ! I bought PhPauction and it would be quiet interesting but it did have quiet some little bugs ..mostly "appearance" (presentation bugs) which aren't that bad but I need to solve them. In the last 4 or 5 days their site doesn't work anymore, can you confirm this ?! I posted one last help ticket but when I wanted to see if they had answered they were gone ?!

Anyway, if someone manages to build a nice auction component for Joomla! that would be great !

Best regards,

Iak

I am not a developer, but I would LOVE this if it were developed!  :pop

Well there's a couple of votes of interest, but so far no developers willing to take it on.  Until someone comes forward with the interest and time to take this on, I'm afraid many of us will still be left wishing for such a component.

As a plan B, I'm wondering if we could generate enough financial support by those of us interested in this to hire a developer to get started on the conversion of PHPauction?

I have not given up on plan A though.  Perhaps someone knows some developers who I might approach?  Maybe they have not seen this thread.

I'm interested in an auction component, and can help with development, but...

I took a quick peek around and came up with a few concerns. Please note that this is based solely on a quick Web search. I have no experience with phpauction yet.

1. I was unable to find a link on the main site to download the GPL version. They seem to be pushing their commercial versions very hard, which leads to the next point.

2. I found a detailed, and very negative review, of the organization maintaining phpauction. The most glaring critiques are about the poor state of the code and the poor support for the GPL version. I have no idea if his comments are valid. Would be good to know.

Let me begin to address your concerns by letting you know that I have used the script on previous production sites, but my volume was not anywhere near the 10,000 user mark the reviews suggests creates problems.

My observation is that the code is indeed in need of some work.  However, it is functional and certainly a good place to start if we're not looking to start from scratch.

My view is that we will encounter many of the bugs referenced in the review, and naturally correct them as we go along.  My hope is as it gets released to the rest of the joomla community, we will see many improvements come.  To this end, once I get enough development support on board I plan on launching a dedicated site to organize our effort and allow for focused community involvement.

Honestly, I have searched far and wide for a decent gpl auction program, and this came the closest, at least from a php standpoint.  There are other scripts out there such as myauction, but it's written on perl and the community supporting it has basically gone on to other ventures.

I have the gpl code and will gladly supply it to you for a look.  Later tonight I'll place it on one of my hosts and reply with a link to the source.

To summarize, I think we can basically establish a whole new branch of the GPL phpauction written as a joomla component.  I'm confident we can fix any bugs in the original code in the process.
