How many people update my Joomla WebSite?

Post by Gare » Tue Apr 03, 2007 2:21 am

Hi -

I am interested in how many people distribute the responsibility for maintaining their Joomla site's content.

ie, How do you enforce the business rule that a specific editor can only edit a specific section of content?

thanks.

Why not just tell people what they can edit, and if they edit something that they're not supposed to, then request that they do not?  Just make it clear to them what they are and are not supposed to change.

Thanks for your reply!

Yes - we are looking at creating some 'business rules' - rules and business processes written out on paper for employees to follow - about who edits which section.

But if someone WERE to edit content they were not supposed to, how would you even know who had made the illicit edit in the current system?
ASFAIK, you would not.

It would be far simpler to just delegate a section to a specific user, assign some permissions, and not have to worry.

Does this make sense?
Thanks again.

yes...  that argument makes sense, at least on one level, and I suppose if your organization is really big, it is a necessity.  Joomla! will not have that capability until 1.6.

You can tell who edited an article last by opening the article up in the back end.  At the bottom of the publishing tab you will see where it says (for example):

I know many disagree with me, and for that reason I agree we need to add this functionality into Joomla!, but at the same time, as the argument goes...  if you assume people are going to break the rules...

I just think there needs to be more trust in our organizations sometimes, and expectations that people WILL do what they are supposed to, and not lock them into boxes.  I think this trust is very good for corporate and working culture.

Just my opinion, and I know many disagree, so you are free to as well.

Gare -

I just stumbled across this module and it looks like what you are looking for:
http://extensions.joomla.org/component/ ... Itemid,35/

I have not installed it, but based on the description, it will allow you to limit access. The review posted on i did warn that there are modifications made to core files and to make sure the site is backed up prior to installation.

Thanks! Very nice!

In back-end:

Content Items Manager > Content Item:  Edit

I also see the Hit Count in that pane there for that Content Item.  (assume that is from Statistics module being enabled).

Cool!

I agree!  I guess I should have steered away from any language of 'mal-intent';  I am interested in managing access to sections of Joomla for the same reason you don't give root access to everyone to your favorite server - just to prevent accidents and be able to debug any problems that come along.

Hi entrecon -

Thanks for pointing this out!

I just found the file

Code: Select all

includes/gacl.class.php
last week, and am able to pick & choose which components to allow my back-end content manager.  It is more clumsy, but means 1 less component to install.

In regards to the back-end, this brings me to another reason to control access:

- to preserve elegance and maintain sanity in your content managers!  :D :D :)

I have a content manager who only wants to focus on the features they are responsible for in order to populate the site; peppering them with extra features in the admin back-end just helps to overwhelm them.

thanks again for the response.
