Migration of discussions on Sourceforge?

Post by mikesamar » Tue Apr 24, 2007 8:20 pm

Will the discussions part on Sourceforge also be migrated to Joomlacode?
Are should I save/transfer this information myself? Doesn anybody have any good suggestions how to do it?

Thank you for the answers.

Best regard Mike

Discussions aka forums are in the backup I've created, no worries.
Since it got lower priority then projects, trackers and docs you'll probably have to wait a bit more for it but still I'll do my best to move 'em as well.

Keep fingers crossed :)

In the meantime, how should we advise the current forge users:

1. Don't post on the old forge, as these weren't captured in the backup and won't be migrated?
2. Don't post on the new forge, as this will mess up the migration script?
3. The project developer is paranoid -- continue to use either server as you normally would.

Hope to give you answers late night today or tomorrow till noon, CET.
Answer = dates when you should stop adding things if you want 'em migrated.

It will be harder for me to migrate project when it's on forge and joomlacode, merging will take some additional time I guess, will have to be done manually, that's for sure. But nothing bad will happen, in worst case only duplicated stuff. At least I hope that.

cheers

1. Final backup will be done on Friday (27.04.2007) afternoon CET (GMT+2), changes made after Friday noon are most likely NOT to be moved.
2. Basically yes.
BTW, if your mail from forge was active you've most likely answered mail we send to you and you gave us your project name from forge.joomla.org and joomlacode.org so we know where to move data and it won't disappear. I hope (silly joke :P)
3. No you're not paranoid but can't tell for sure :D

Being serious, migration are planned to be done (mostly) after weekend. Keep fingers crossed.
That's not secret info, will be mailed shortly by Tonie :)

Just to double check - you meant 27.04.2007 right?

Thanks for all the hard work.  It must be a nightmarish exercise with little mental satisfaction - just the stress to reward you.

Sorry to say that but it might take still few days due to some technical problems with it, the worst case scenario is around half of the next week.

*sigh*

It's there, please check out if everything's ok and so on. I know that I'm author of all posts :p, since I couldn't map forge users to jcode users that was the only possibility I guess. Another issue is with posts order, when switched to 'threaded' looks much better. If someone will start throwing bricks through my flat's windows I'll think of adjusting dates in very simple manner (+1 sec to next post or so).
All migrated forums are marked with 'Migration. ' string before forge name.

Hope everything's fine with it.

And very sorry for being so late with it, shame on me but couldn't make it faster.

cheers!

Great news :D !!!

Thank you very much for migrating the forum.
It looks great.

The only remark I have now is that the url's are text instead of links. Is it possible to migrate the urls as links or convert them easly now, instead of editing all messages? The links are important as examples.
Also there are other html-codes that aren't translated right, but I'll edit them myself.

Cheers Mike

That's tricky. Reason is that the data from sfee is stripped of html, no links and so on. I can grab all posts and replace linkhere with linkhere but for some forums it will work well but others might not want to have it. And getting feedback on that from all jcode admins will take up to 3 months in my humble opinion.

Anyway, I will write script that grab posts from your forums and replace text in that manner, I'll ask S&I folks if they think we should apply that to all migrated projects but I doubt :).
It won't be ready tomorrow but will definitely take less then month, mostly because there are not planned summits in next weeks :p.

If you see any other issues that could be fixed automatically plz tell me.

Thanks for looking at this problem.

I like to have these links converted. So you have my vote.

If you have developed a script for it, please let me know. I'll keep my forum closed till this is done.

Good luck with making this script.

Cheers Mike

Is there anyway to retrieve attachments that were part of the forums on JoomlaForge?  These didn't seem to transfer in the migration script.

Thanks!

Sorry to say that but there were no technical possibility to even make a backup of it. All posts and artifacts attachments as well as wiki are lost.

Hello Facedancer,

What is the status of the migration of the links in the forums?

Did you write a script for it? Or did they decide not to build it in general?

Please let me know what we can expect.

Cheers Mike
