Re: My Church Site
You might want to correct the link to http://cumcmemphis.org
It's a thorough site with what looks like a wealth of information to help any prospective newcomer in deciding whether this is the right church to join. I really like the different color scheme for each section and the informative and sometimes fun photos.
The only fault (that's a bit unfair) I can pick is the text is butted up against the logo on the Music Academy page. That's all, really. Well done!

Thanks about the link. Weird it kept adding the extra http to it automatically. Fixed now.
If that is your only fault I am thankful although I could come up with a hundred or so more. Some of the problem is that the church develops this logos usually for 4 color print publications. They want to use it on the website but it doesn't always look that great. I need to get a picture of one of the kids playing an instrument or maybe a Hemera image will do.

Re: My Church Site
greetings,
liked the site i had a question about the sermon component. is that a custom? or a name mod of something else readily available? our church is getting ready to switch to joomla/mambo and that would be a great asset.
thanks,
jamaicabob

Yep, it's custom along with several other things. For instance, there is a mambot that will create a link to the verses that it finds on pages. The sermon component was somewhat tailored to our pastor since he writes and makes available his complete sermon in long hand. The podcasting component, loudblog was added later. If you have the space and don't have full text sermons, then loudblog would be the way to go with it IMO.

Re: My Church Site
Nice site... I love the sermon component. Any chance it will be made available at the Forge?

Re: My Church Site
As far as the Sermon component, I would like to have it available as a separate component. There are several things that I will have to do first to get it ready. I didn't actually develop the component. I contracted it out to someone else. I have since edited and tweaked it but I would need to get her permission first. There are other things as well. One is that it was originally adapted from my old website. The problem is that it is not as Joomla friendly as it should be. I am currently working on making it more compatible and available as a separate component. It lacks some of the basic content management parts like metatags, WYSIWYG editor, page parameters, etc.
So I will try my best but I can't promise anything soon.

Thank you. I will pray that the developer allow you to release the code. What about the ministries code. Actually I love them.

I'd love to have access to the Sermon Component as well. I've been trying to tweak other components to do exactly what you've accomplished.

Re: My Church Site
i thought the same thing but if you look at the top of the page just to the right of the menu options, you'll see it. (i suppose the typical, if not standard, would have been to have a downloads section)
Re: My Church Site
What about your ministries & staff components? Are they custom or mods of existing compnents?

I downloaded and installed the com_sermonspeaker files.... installation was identified as being successful... but when I try anything I get the following error.
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ';' in /home/.beanor/top100in/net2community.com/joomla/administrator/components/com_sermonspeaker/config.sermonspeaker.php on line 26
I am using Joomla 1.0.10 and your version 2.0 just released this June
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Re: My Church Site
I uploaded a bad release. New one uploaded today - with enhancement of floating help tags for the links on the client side. (Also changed the default sermon speaker to Billy Sunday's sermon on Booze.)

Re: My Church Site
I don't understand "podcast" any more than "mp3 download". Seems to me that "podcast" is nothing more than a marketing term created by apple to sell ipods. If my belief is true, you will be doing just fine with sermonspeaker component. You may want to change the tags from "sermon" to "podcast" if you like.

Re: My Church Site
well, it's not the "mp3 download" aspect of podcasting i'm actually wondering about... that can happen with a regular link for that matter. what i'm wondering about is the "broadcast" aspect. while "podcasting" may seem like just an marketing thing, it allows a website owner/content creator to "broadcast" via an RSS feed and have subscribers via itunes or other rss readers. This way, when you create/release new content, your subscribers know about it automatically since they are subscribed. Some feeds are even monetized (they are fee based) so a content create can earn money for his/her work.
i'll play around with sermonspeaker a bit since i haven't had time to yet. i'll redownload to have the latest version and see how i can set up feeds based on a speaker (series/messages probably won't be as significant for that) and let you know (if you're interested).
thx,
jb

Re: My Church Site - podcast
Well, that makes a lot of sense! I like the idea of syndication and compensation. Yes, I'd be interested to integrate your enhancements!I have a bunch of other improvements to the component to make... but it all takes time.

well, first off, since i'm not too technical, what i meant by playing around with the component was to see what concepts i might suggest for you to consider in terms or your improvements... since i still haven't played with it my initial guess would be that if your speaker is a joomla category and the series a joomla section in that category, then something like the podcast suite could be used to "broadcast" that category/section combination. beyond that, to make this component self-reliant (relating to podcasting), you'd want to integrate some rss features and have the option for including enclosures so a user could simply rss the sermon descriptions or podcast the messages...
i hope all that made sense... lol
thx at least, for listening (or maybe i should say, putting up with my non-technical jibberish...)

Re: My Church Site
Nice work, I am new to Joomla and am wondering. How did you get the template to use a different background color for each main section?
Re: My Church Site
Nice job on the site, how did you handle the advanced search? I am deciding if I want to convert my site over to Joomla, http://www.dailybibleonline.com and I have ton of online content which is table based already.
Thanks
Rick
