Help me customize my template

Post by velimir » Mon Jul 23, 2007 1:14 pm

Hi,

I have web page.. http://www.energetika.co.yu.  I need someone to help me customize my template. I actually mean that
page should be made compatible with Firefox, Opera, IE. Then to preformat poll component so that buttons appear in same line etc..
and few other minor changes.

If anyone is interested to help me please let me know. It is 10-15 minute job.

Thanks in advance

Velimir,

This probably isn't the reply you were looking for, but it's my humble opinion.  I'm new to the joomla community, but have caught the fever and am in the process of converting most of our sites as well as customer sites to joomla.  I guess you could say I've caught the fever so to speak.

When trying to optimize a site, you have to consider not only the browsers it will be viewed in, but also the many factors based on user modification of those browsers.  Some people use a larger font to make sites easy to read.  Some disable images to make sites load faster.  Many people do not allow javascript or other scripts to run from websites for simple fear of security threats(whether real or not).

So, in the end, I always try to design with as many of the possibilities of my end users in mind.

If you're looking to optimize your site for all browsers, why not go the extra step and make it accessible to mobile and text/only browsers as well?  That would, in my humble opinion, be the next logical step in the process.  So why not just make it so from the beginning of the design process?

From what I see, your template is built mainly from a table format.  It's a clean looking template, but tables do have their limits where user accessibility is concerned.

It would turn your 10-15 minute job into a couple of hours, but my suggestion for now as well as the future accessibility of your site as browsers change and new technologies come about would be to replace your tables with CSS/  They will do the same or IMO better job representing your site, and will alleviate about 99% of your accessibility problems in ALL browsers.

Your site will load faster, cleaner, and be "prettier" to text only/mobile browsers too.  I won't pretend to be an expert on css, but Barrie North of Compass Designs has written quite a lot on this on his site as well as here on the joomla forums.  He even offers free tutorials on css design which I believe to be well worth a read.

Like I said, probably not the answer you were looking for, but it could make a huge difference in your work load later.

Hi David,

Thank you very much for your answer and opinion. I appreciate that very much.
Although you point out some very interesting facts I will have to stick to
old fashioned table design for now. my site is still in design phase and I
can't even imagine where it will be in few years.

Thank you very much for your time.

Well it's nothing big. I need

1.My site to display properly in FF and Opera
2.To fix apperance of top menu in FF so it looks like in IE ( I guess that is part of first task).
3.To position on adapt horizontal gray lines that divide content so that align properly and
become equal.

I am sure this is not hard to do. I completed many tasks on my own before these but I
am finding difficulty to finish finish everything off.

I would really appreciate your help. Please write to velimirl at gmail.com

Thanks!!
