Why is there no Offical Joomla Template Directory?

Post by MetalHellsangel » Fri Aug 31, 2007 10:52 pm

I'm just wondering, I mean you have the extension directory, it would be nice to see an official template directory here on the official joomla site. Does anyone else not wonder about this?

Mostly the reason why there isn't a site run template directory is because there are numerous template repositories out there already, and with the absolutely huge amount of templates out there, the job to set up, run and upkeep a directory is a monumental task in terms of workload.  I know it has been mentioned a number of times of the forums before.  I think it will happen some day.  Right now it is most important to get 1.5 to stable.

What Mmmedia says. First a direction needs to be chose, 'all templates ever made' vs 'a showcase of a small number of templates per developer'. Then an extension will have to be created/modified to work towards that goal. Then we need a lot of manhours to test and set it up. Last, a lot of manhours will be needed to maintain it. It will be there one day, though not this year most likely.

Thanks for the reply, mostly I was just curious though I think it would be great to see this added, I understand why it's not here now.

Or..... how bout you guys just start fresh with 1.5 ?

Its a small and easily handled amount of templates.
Most template makers release only one or two a month it seems... and thats with the general 1.0 series of templates.
How difficult would a system similar to the JED be?

Clone the JED, offer to list any templates made for native 1.5 use, and link to the makers demo site... if possible even host a simple PNG low quality preview image of the template for folks to look at (specially helpful for the smaller template makers who dont have a LiveDemo area).

that would be a good Idea I think Since 1.5 is just now released. It would be nice to see an official template site for joomla, and what better timing then the first initial release of the new version of joomla?
