Ocean Revolution is looking for someone to help flesh out their Joomla website. Check out our mission statement and our lame-oh website we're now running at http://www.oceanrevolution.org.
We have a partially developed Joomla site I will send you to look at. We'd love to find someone who's ramped up on Joomla to save us the learning curve and to help us get on with our work.
The climate for positive environmental action is growing at an accelerated rate, but so are our ocean’s increasingly complex problems. To ensure our success in countering these threats, to prevent irreversible damage to our oceans and to promote beneficial use of our ocean resources we must engage our youth in ocean conservation. Ocean Revolution believes in enabling and empowering new leaders to influence their peers. We are working to help them create a broad-based network of youthful informed activist citizens who modify their lifestyles to eliminate additional environmental pressure on our oceans and to create new solutions to the problems they will inherit.
Conservation groups receive thousands of inquiries each year from students searching for ways to funnel their creative energy into ocean conservation. Often they are directed to short-term summer programs, classes, field trips and camps. But those with serious interest are rarely offered year-round engagement or the chance to meet adults working for the protection and celebration of our ocean environment. Even less frequently are future leaders given the critical skills to enlist and educate other teens.
The Ocean Revolution mentoring program links highly motivated teens interested in ocean conservation with established and emerging voices in conservation and communication. We seek teens from the entire complex of global youth undistinguished by race, ethnicity, physical ability, education, consumption level, politics or religion.
We then give these future conservation leaders the means to connect with each other and reach their peers through a virtual network of new media tools where they can promote the development of an ocean ethic, influence consumption and lifestyle choices and celebrate the beauty of our living ocean environment.
The Ocean Revolution Program utilizes the following methodology to accomplish these goals:
• Seeking out Ocean Revolution Leadership Council Members. Nominations are solicited from an international network of scientists, educators, conservationists, and partner organizations. These teenagers form the core of Ocean Revolution. At two conferences each year they join scientists, writers, conservationists and other participants to network and focus on knowledge building, the utilization of traditional and modern tools of expression, and outreach skills. (January 2005 and ongoing)
• Establishing mentor relationships for the Ocean Revolution Leadership Council. By engaging a wide variety of ocean conservation professionals, scientists, educators, activists, politicians, and business people we ensure that each Revolutionary connects with a wide range of professionals engaged in conservation. Today’s youth leaders must also find new ways to communicate to a generation that takes in more and more of it’s information visually and through electronic media. Ocean Revolution mentors engaged in film-making, writing, art, music, and new media help Council Leaders develop their own style of effectively getting their ideas into the world. (January 2005 and ongoing)
• Expanding the Ocean Revolution network by identifying and virtually linking members through an interactive website. Combining new media tools, searchable profiles, calendars and projects, photo and video sharing, blogs and podcasts with links to information databases, forums, chat rooms, and celebrations of conservation success stories changes the traditional learning experience into an active process of knowledge construction. The shy person, the reflective thinker, the disabled or isolated teenager can actively participate and become empowered, self-reliant, interdependent, and reflexive using these new forums. The virtual network deemphasizes charismatic looks and traditional speaking skills encouraging new voices, new perspectives and new solutions. (Fall 2005 launch)
• Targeting Hispanic, indigenous, and other under-reached teens. Ocean Revolution helps them discover and develop passion for ocean conservation, it nurtures and promotes career choices that will benefit ocean conservation and, where appropriate, provides factual and leadership support for the environmental justice movement. (Indigenous Youth Exchange October 2005 and ongoing)
• Promoting the Ocean Revolution Patch Program. Bridging progressive and traditional youth programs, the Ocean revolution Patch program challenges Scouts, Boys and Girls Clubs, church groups, camps, and schools with conservation objectives and activities that are rewarded with a badge of achievement and membership in Ocean Revolution. (May 2005 and ongoing)
• Collaborating with educators. Using online tools built on low-cost software-ware-based technologies expands the classroom and allows teenagers to work outside standardized-test-based curriculums. Involving college and post-graduate educators in the Ocean Revolution program establishes a route for Leadership Council members to enter the conservation community. As mentors and advisors they help Ocean Revolution staff to develop and distribute innovative ideas for initiating and maintaining the involvement of young people in ocean conservation through critical educational milestones. (Ongoing)
• Establishing and promoting through Ocean Revolution the principles of family-based conservation. By building on a youthful base, the energy and resources of the entire family can be harnessed for ocean conservation and the creation of a universal sea ethic. (Ongoing)
• Organizing international “Ocean Solutions” contests that promote creative problem solving at the local level. Ocean Revolution will provide start-up funds for awarded projects and through the Ocean Revolution Advisory Board provide feasibility oversight to evaluate and promote wider applications of these projects. (Fall 2006)
• Leading a multi-faceted social marketing campaign. By utilizing concerts, endorsements, commercial tie-ins, wristbands, stickers, and t-shirts we will increase the visibility of Ocean Revolution and establish conservation ideas in a teen-conscious way. (Ocean Revolution Concert Summer 2007 and ongoing.)
