A Way to improve the Joomla! Version Info

Post by soeren » Wed Dec 13, 2006 2:59 pm

Hi,

currently the Joomla! Version Info is a static content page with all version listed on this page.
I have developed and published a small and nice component called Version Manager which is made especially for the task of managing and listing the version history of a certain software.

This component allows you to
  • give the user a link "Check for the latest version" (as seen in joomlaXplorer and VirtueMart)
  • offer an RSS/Atom Feed of the last 5 versions

My suggestion is that the official Joomla! site should make use of this component to manage the Joomla! versions.
This also gives the opportunity to have a link "Check for the latest version" that directly opens a small popup with the information if the installed version is the latest available version (which was to be implemented in 1.0.11 as an Ajax checker, but was dropped shortly before the 1.0.11 release).

What do you think of this idea? Definitely a good chance to improve the service for all Joomla! users.

This sounds indeed good, but as for the introduced Check in 1.0.11 which was dropped is the question:

what impact will have this for the joomla.org site

without exact details and tests it could be really risky for the server.
The "Humor, Fun and Games" forum has  more than 2500 Posts, so why not build a "Humor, Fun and Games Working" Group?
.....
Malicious tongues say we have this WG right from the start, they call it core team :D
