Tanasi Journal

Post by NativePages » Fri May 04, 2007 6:38 pm

I'd like to introduce you to (and show off) Tanasi Journal (http://www.tanasijournal.com).

This project actually started out as a grant funded print newspaper and remains, as is advertised, the Southeast's only American Indian news source. Unfortunately, we were unable to build up an advertising base that would sustain our print operations before we ran out of grant funds. The print version was suspended in 2005 and we searched for designers and developers to move the paper's website from static pages that simply marketed the print version to a dynamic site. Funding was again an issue.

Thanks to Joomla, iJoomla, and Rocket Themes, however, the paper is once again live and very affordably so! Now if we can just sell enough advertising to build up the reserve needed to publish a print edition, too!

The site is running on the Joomla core installation. Layout is achieved with iJoomla Magazine and Rocket Theme's "vortex" template. There are a limited number of other extensions installed, but we haven't deployed them yet. Right now, we're getting almost everything we need from the iJoomla Magazine extension. We have purchased iJoomla Sidebars to give the site a bit more depth and versatility, and will begin using it more extensively soon.

We're also still tweaking layout and getting used to how it all functions, but overall, I'm delighted with how this all came together. What used to take nearly 1 month to assemble and layout for print took just two weeks to set up, customize, and take live. News is reported now instead of later and is fresh instead of stale. One of the favored tools that comes standard with iJoomla Magazine is the customizeable newsletter option, which is being used very effectively as a cross-cultural education and advocacy tool.

Respectfully,
NativePages (4 sites done, more to go!)

Nice site. Very nice.
The homepage format doesn't seem to work very well. The news articles aren't wide enough, so they get really long.
The rest seems good.

What is the size on your browser setting? I'm running 1024 wide and it isn't long on my screen. I may need to check it under some different settings.

I tried it with 1024 and it still didn't seem right.
