Is the new beta test's button a callback function?

Post by brian » Fri May 04, 2007 10:49 pm

Great work on the release. A live demo CD including the beta2 will be available shortly

I'm a bit confused at the beta tester images. Why are they available in this way as opposed to the more normal method used for things like the shop images. Is it so that the IP address and website of everyone displaying the image can be logged? I cant think of any other reason to do it this way?

You got it Brian, always handy to have all those IP addresses ready for using and abusing.

It's quite simple. By recommending that people display this image using this code joomla can harvest the information. firstly Joomla could use the information to say that X people have beta tested the software. secondly joomla could use the information to say you have no right to comment as you havent participated in beta testing. thirdly as vimes pointed out elsewhere if you use the code supplied it will break yiur site if either of the dev or joomlacode servers are offline or slow. fourthly it is akin to callback code in software and is abhorant. many an open source project has fied as a result of callback code. (note I use the word could not would)

Please reconsider this recomendation and adopt the words used at http://shop.joomla.org/index.php?option ... &Itemid=33 instead which are far more appropriate and sensible on all levels

I thank you for your concern Brian, I would have sincerely appreciated it if you would have opened a thread in the Sites and Infrastructure forum about this, instead of hijacking the announcement. I fail to see what led to the fact that your first reaction is that the S&I team is using this for callback methods and other nasty bahaviour.

Its experience of other open source projects that have listened to Marketing droids and then seen the consequences. I posted imeediately in the hope that it would be corrected before too many people saw it

Too late for that now. I'm going to clean this, and move it to the place where it belongs, the S&I feedback forum, and deal with it when we have got the time.

I totally agree with that, I have a train to catch in five hours, so for today it is too late.

Most websites offer copy/paste code to display their banner on your site, which calls an image on their webspace, nothing unusual and it's easy to see in the code too...
As to using that info to say someone can't comment because (s)he is not using it, that's a bit far-fetched, no..? I don't have to display a badge when I'm testing, do I?
