Feature Comparison Chart for Extensions

Post by HH » Sun May 06, 2007 6:16 pm

Dear all,

I wonder if it possible to add a "feature comparison chart" for the extensions placed over Joomla! directory.

I'm talking about something like what Gallery-Addon.com team had placed for the Gallery Extension found here

So, why don't a specialized team expand this idea to be featured for all the extensions?

In my opinion this might help
  • users to know why + how to pic up and extension;
  • and developers to keep on updating their extensions.

That's all  :)

A nice idea, but:

1) the workload would be tremendous? Who'd volunteer to monitor the components and keep the tables up-to-date?

2) Who would get to write the table? The developer of component X or the developer of rival component Y?

3) There aren't many kinds of components that can be easily compared.

Thanks for your input and here is mine.
I've re-formated my reply.

1) That's the question. I wonder if a group of specialzed developers can do so.

2) Neither developers of the components nor supporters. I meant a neutral team according to the NPOV Policy.
Check Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia: ... nt_of_view

P.S. In case this idea could be implemented, this need a special criteria.

3) Well this happens before in the Gallery extensions as I told in the main post.

On the other hand, there are many extensions that have not been updated since almost one year like the backup extensions and it might be able to be hacked.

I've another point.
The classification could be  on two major categories
  • Free or GPL License Components;
  • Commercial Components.

It's not an easy job I know however it's just an idea to discuss.

Setting this up would mean:

* Creating a list of all categories that need to be done.
* List all current extensions in one or more of those categories.
* Decide about the features per category.
* Test each extensions on those features and create the comparison list.

Currently, there are more than 1500 extensions on the extensions site. I don't even want to think what kind of man hours this would take to compile.

I have to be honest and say that I started to create a comparison chart for the newsletter extensions but it just took far too long

brian and Tonie
Thanks a lot for your helpful input.

Interesting news from brain indeed.

As per the idea: I do not mean all the 1690+ extensions; I meant the most effective ones like Gallery-One team have placed. They didn't place all what the gallery extensions currently display.

On the other hand, I do suggested in my 2nd reply something to maintain justices and to be fair

Don't you think guys that this will motivate developers specially after launching Joomla 1.5 officially?

It will be a huge job to do, I don't think we have that resources and by the end of the day, leave some space for the fan sites :)
