Suggestions for the Joomla! Extensions Directory

Post by nrigo » Tue Aug 14, 2007 7:36 pm

Hello,

Sorry, my English is not perfect and thank you to spell checker which improves my level !

Here is some suggestions linked to extensions compatibility on the extensions.joomla.org site.

First issue:
It could be more easy to show the compatibility between the different Joomla! releases in all the displays (New extensions, Editor's Pick, Most Popular, etc.) as we have to open the detailed article to see the compatibility >:(.

Second issue:
The real compatibility of extensions is not so clear when a developper announce a Joomla 1.0 and Joomla 1.5 compatibility. Is it with legacy mode or not ? For each extension we have to read the extension article and in most of cases we finally find the information on the developper web site or in the release note. >:( >:(

You could implement 3 compatibility levels (or more) as follow and request an article update to developers.

1. Joomla old release logo (Joomla 1.0 right now) = full compatibility with the previous release(s)
2. Joomla legacy logo = compatibility with the new release when the Legacy Mode is enabled
3. Joomla new release logo (Joomla 1.5 right now) = full compatibility with the new release (or with beta version)

Third issue:
You could perhaps implement a section to display all categories of Joomla! 1.5 extensions (full compatibility) and repeat this for each new Joomla! release ?  :)

What do think about this ?

Kind regards,

I think the above makes a lot of sense.  It might prevent a lot of potential problems with incompatible extensions as people start migrating.

I know for myself, I would find it useful to at least have the "1.5 and 1.13" flag in the "browsing" extension screen rather than after you drill down to the specific extension detail.  It just allows for quicker scanning of what is or isn't compatible with an installed version.

I have been testing out 1.5 RC on a portion of my site, and when I was looking for extensions, the above posters suggestions would (and will) have been very useful.

Cheers,
Chris

sorry mods....didn't see this link (with similar concepts) prior to this post:  http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,201647.0.html
