Calling a template from a template

In post http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,218949.0.html reply #2 it was mentioned how to call a template from a template.
I did not know that and therefore I use the template assignment facility in the backend to connect to another template via f.i. a menu item. So, when the menu-item is clicked, it calls up the assigned template.

Is that the way to do it or should I use the method as mentioned in the thread?
I can see that it all depends on what one wants to achieve, I suppose.

Edit: Yes this is the way to do it. It is quite funny answering yourself while nobody else seem to be interested in this topic.
