Joomla 101 Class Forming? When?

Post by HerbM » Thu Nov 22, 2007 1:38 am

According to the following (Draft Outline) Article there is (to be?) an ongoing (series of)
Beginning Joomla Development Course(s), which will form each time enough participants
register:

  Joomla! Beginning Developer Course
    http://dev.joomla.org/component/option,com_jd-wiki/Itemid,/id,jbeginners:introduction/

My main question is:  How do we register?

(Or Where is the registration page?)

Have any of these courses been run here yet?

What will it take to form the next (first?) one?

If the problem/delay is that the "courseware" isn't developed yet, then I believe that if
we gather a class then many students will agree that the "cost" of taking this FREE
course includes helping to write and develop some of those very materials.  (If each participant
writes up or edits and existing tutorial or guide then we will have even more content for the
next class.)

If the problem is lack of an instructor then I am sure there are "Joomla newbies" like myself
who have long experience in many of the prerequiquisites (e.g., PHP, MySQL) and non-Joomla
specific topics (e.g., Object Design & Development, Model-View-Controller Architectures) to
gather a group which can function as a peer group for such a class.

I would prefer to be a "student" but if no one has the time to lead the (next) course then I
will volunteer to be a "player/coach" and act as a guide (rather than as a teacher per se, since
I have only begun writing my first few Joomla components during the last week.)

Learning Joomla Development will likely be easier with a class or cohort of friends and fellow
students to work along side.  It almost certainly will be more fun!

Let's do it -- together....

Please read the 'official' (proposed?) description here:

Joomla! Beginning Developer Course
    http://dev.joomla.org/component/option, ... roduction/

...but also please understand that your message is the first response to my attempt to
actually find -- or just start -- the next class, and so if we do this on our own it can be
anything (within reason along the lines of the proposed course) that we choose to make it.

I am puzzling through myself too.... Templates are probably much better documented than
coding -- there are many articles and even published books that cover this -- likely due to
the assumption that "admins" build templates  but don't write code as often or have as
much interest in coding new extensions themselves.
