Please take care of this problem.  That bottom one, at least, is a porn site.  I nor other people should have to be sent stuff of this nature.

I just got a message from "Harrison Ford" to join some porn site. He had no amount of posts and was able to personal message me.

Is there any way that the forum moderators could prevent someone from pming someone else unless they had a certain amount of posts?

(I just woke up and the last thing I wanted to see was a personal message from someone at joomla. Here I thought it was joomla related... nope I just saw a picture of some guy's junk... its way too early in my day for that...) ;)

In this case, we have been told of the user's name and banned that account.
It was user "Harrison Ford".

i don't know about you people but that photo was def photoshopped ;)

Something else instead of doing # posts to be able to pm... why not disable html urls in pms?

That spammer has been banned as soon as we got the report.

He could have sent quite a few pms in the meanwhile...

I was the one that banned the user in question straight away, after getting multiple reports about the PM.

Unfortunately, we can't do too much against this except ban as fast as humanly possible. The spammers create an account by hand, and send PM/post spam by hand. On a positive note, most spammers are banned within minutes. All global moderators have the ability to ban spammers. Thanks for the reports.

Have also merged the three identical threads into this one thread.

When I get a chance, it looks like I might have to disallow the ability of sending PM's/Emails to users unless user has a certain number of posts... sad reality, but due to our popularity Joomla! is a target for spammers etc etc. I can also assure you that the moderation team works very hard to clamp down on spammers and keep the forums clean.

Same thing I thought.  I'd posted a question earlier and I thought "hey, maybe someone has a solution".  Or maybe they saw my site and thougt it was cool or something.
Nope.  Just a huge wang on the screen.

Requiring users to have a certain number of posts before they can PM might help, as long as it doesn't count posts that are deleted.

Anyways, thanks for trying your best to help the situation.

Brad.

That is a great idea.  There are not many times you to to pm somebody and if you do chances are that you have know the person on the forum for a while.  Setting a minimum post would stop people from pm spamming.

Cheers
Dave

Ok, users who have less than 5 posts cannot send PM's or 'email to a friend'. Hopefully this will prevent situations like this happening again.

Sorry for the trouble that this user caused.

I would like to mention that I have two SMF forums set up and Harrison Ford spammed both of them with this same type of message.   Nice way to kill the vibe of a volunteer community with di@kheads like this with too much time on their hands.

Are there any ways to prevent this from being so easy to accomplish withouth crippling the openness of a forum setup?  I know character recognition during signup might help against bots, etc.  I guess I'll have to clamp down on permissions in the mean time... hate penalizing the group for a rogue spammers actions.

EDIT: I know this SMF isn't Joomla related; but wanted to mention it for the benefit of others.  I will be implementing Joomla front ends for both of my forums, fyi!  :-)
