FAQ: "Content Management - Managing the Content Creation Process"

Post by TerryKing » Wed Nov 29, 2006 6:27 pm

I WISH there was such an FAQ.

Joomla is a Content Management System.  Read the list of FAQ's and there is none on CONTENT ??? or Content Management.

I need to define a strategy for managing content, and content creators:

- Decide what the content structure (Section-Category-Content) is for your application
- Decide what classes of content creators you have.  (I have a large school with 75 employees, and 25 who create information).
- Decide exactly what tools / Editor you will provide to your content providers. Maybe have them differentiated.
- Decide how to TEACH the Content Creators how to use the system.
- Decide how to TEACH the Editor/Publisher people how to do their job. (Define a policy first!)
- Decide how to manage the Front Page. (Define a policy first!)
- Decide how to manage the life-cycle of information.

This is all AFTER you get thru all the other FAQ's and finally get a system running and customized!  I have spent a sometimes-frustrating 100+ hours on getting a Joomla site sort of started.  There is no overall Step-By-Step.
My sandbox: http://terryking.us/joomla_tk
is just starting to work. I've done the first thing on the list above.  Now I need to learn how to do the rest. Probably the hard way.

Any pointers to information / tutorials cover this stuff would be appreciated!

A friend in the USA and I (I'm in Africa) are working on a site to eventually help Education users to set up School websites.
Take a look at: http://www.openedweb.com/moodle/ for the barely-started work. I hope we will eventually have a true step-by-step documented.

Or, try going directly to: http://www.openedweb.com/moodle/mod/res ... x.php?id=4
(You'll have to sign up the first time, then go back...). This is a series of documents which is my first-pass on a process of planning/designing a moderately large site with many content-creators.

Feedback! to terry@terryking.us

Joomla is a very functional system. It does NOT need to be so painful to design and bring up a non-trivial Joomla Site!

What we are doing in the FAQs as of now is to provide relatively straightforward content-independent answers to questions about Joomla! and how to use it. People use Joomla! for personal sites, for organization sites, for schools, for ecommerce. Some sites are one person operations, some have thousands. Joomla! with its structure of a very focused core and extensions for specific tasks has the flexibility to meet these needs.

So, I think you are talking more about a best practices document for schools and other sites with a moderate number of users. That's a great idea, and maybe you can start it and post it. That would be a great contribution on your part.

You might ask for advice and feed back on this on the forum that is specifically focused on educational institutions.

Read your words before posting and think about how other people will read them. Be polite. Be kind. Be constructive. Say thank you.
