What i would require for a non-profit site
Hi,
Just decided to take alook at joomla. i am the webmaster at http://www.4thgolcarscoutgroup.org.uk i would be looking for a CMS which allowed me to base the site on the current design.
But the major thing would be the ability to allow users access to pages which are only within their section, i.e. a Scout Leader would only have access to the Scout Pages, where as a Cub Scout Leader would only have Access to the Cub Scout Pages.
Anyone have anything which may allow this, or even know if Joomla already allows this?

Hi Daniel,
Currently, the ability to limit editing to certain areas of content in Joomla is not integrated into the system. There are a number of developers here that are working on the ACL, which will provide access level control on a fine tuned level such as by section or category of content. I'm not sure that this will be out until Joomla 1.2, however.

Yes, that is also something that I've always wanted to see more development with is the users and user groups section. Not only in the nonprofit that I run, but also in a corporate environment in which we have been slowly working to migrate towards Mambo/Joomla.

This is a shot in the dark but is there any time you may have before 1.2 is out? - months, years etc.
I know its a stupid question but diffrent scripts are updated at diffrent speeds and just wonded how long you are meaning when you say proabably wont be out till 1.2

The roadmap http://www.joomla.org/content/view/14/28/ shows 1.1 being out last quarter of 2005 / first quarter 2006. No dates for 1.2 onwards but must be after this.

When you say "access" do you mean that those without access cannot see the pages? Or that they can't edit them?
There are definitely ways to accomplish either, but it takes a little doing. It also depends how secure you require things to be.
For example, on my school site, anyone can see the homepage of any group, but if they aren't being nosey they don't go to them because when they log in they get a menu that makes them select a group. That's the simplest thing.
You can also use myhomehage and create what he calls "themes" which is basically groups. The owner of a page can limit access to specific themes.

ok for example,
i have 4 sections / categories. - including static pages.
The editors for section 1 can only edit category 1, but view category 1,2,3 and 4.

Hi there, I was interested in Mambo, too, in fact I tested it for my organisation, but the same problem as daniel1987, The access control level is not there.
Many Organisations have a structure level for their organisation, I am in a martial arts organisations and there will be contents that is only for a certain type of experienced user.
As for daniel1987 there needs to be access control but in my organisation this is even more finely structured, I will try to bring light to this:

We are looking also into the localization features to be great, with the ability to have translations of stuff.

This is highly complex, so I wonder whether you will be building something like that or something more simple.

I believe the Core Team is integrating phpGACL (http://phpgacl.sourceforge.net/), which will therefore support a wide variety of different authorization schemes, ranging from simple to complex.

I have a similar requirement, but there's really not a great amount of open source software out there that can accomplish this. I settled on Joomla/vbulletin with vbridge installed. The permissions system of vbulletin is perfect for this kind of thing, although obviously everything would be prettier if I could run it through joomla frontpages instead.

I know that this is the Joomla board, but I would recommend looking at www.plone.org for well developed ACL.
It is designed for large organizations and sites. It scales to multiple servers with very little effort.
Joomla is great for website management, for content, that happens to be web accessable, management Plone is a solution you should consider.
